đź’¦ Drowning is one of the leading causes of injury-related death in young children-but many drowning incidents are preventable.
Prevention doesn’t rely on a single strategy. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using multiple layers of protection:
✅ Constant, undistracted supervision (“water watchers”)
âś… Four-sided pool fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates
âś… Swim lessons when developmentally appropriate
âś… CPR training for caregivers
âś… Properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when needed
âś… Removing water hazards around the home
Remember: drowning is often silent and can happen in seconds. Flotation devices, puddle jumpers, and lifeguards do not replace active adult supervision.
As summer begins, take a few minutes to review your water safety plan and share these tips with family members, babysitters, and caregivers. Working together, we can help keep children safe around water all season long. đź’™
