This Sunday is Grandparents Day. It's also the first day of National Assisted Living Week — and that isn't a coincidence.

NCAL created the week in 1995 and deliberately set it to open on Grandparents Day every year. The week starts on the one Sunday when families are already walking through the door.

This year's theme is "Shining Through the Years." Notice the word: shining, not shone. Not a look back at a life that's mostly behind someone. The light is still on.

The theme honors residents — and it honors the people who help that light stay on. That second part deserves more attention than it usually gets.

It's the caregiver who learns without being told that your mother has taken her coffee the same way since 1961. Who knows which resident gets restless around four and quietly finds her something to do at ten till. Who asks about the same photograph for the third time because she knows which one produces the good story.

It's whoever is awake in that house at three in the morning. The only reason a family finally sleeps through the night is that somebody else is sitting up. Nobody ever sees that job done well.

Home care. Assisted living. Skilled nursing. Most families assume these are points on one scale, running from a little help to a lot.

They're not. They're three different answers to three different questions.

Home care brings a caregiver to the house she already lives in. Assisted living is a move to a place where help is part of daily life. Skilled nursing is a licensed medical facility with nurses on site around the clock.

So the question isn't "how much help does she need." It's what's actually gone wrong.

Does the house still work? If she moves through it safely and gets through the night fine, home care may be exactly right — and we'll tell you that.

Has the house become the obstacle? Stairs she shouldn't be on, a bathroom that can't be made safe, nights with nobody there, days where she doesn't speak to anyone? Adding hours doesn't fix a building, and it doesn't fix being alone.

Does she need a caregiver or a nurse? That one's a question for her doctor, not a brochure.

It started small.

A visit on the weekend. Picking up a prescription while you were out anyway. Then every weekend. Then a call on a Tuesday night that turned into a drive. Then her medication list lived in your phone and you were calling the pharmacy on your lunch break.

Nobody decided this. It accumulated. And you've been doing it a lot longer than you meant to.

You're not unusual. AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving count roughly 63 million Americans caring for an adult family member — about one in four adults. They average 27 hours a week. Nearly a quarter are at 40 or more.

Here's the finding worth sitting with: one in five rate their own health as fair or poor.

So — when did you last see your own doctor? Not made the appointment. Actually went.

Labor Day weekend is coming, and for a lot of families it's the one time all year everybody's in the same room. If there's a conversation your family has been circling, that's usually when it happens.

We mean it as a compliment. But every one of those sentences assumes that by now, she shouldn't be. The compliment is really surprise. And she knows it.

Tomorrow is National Senior Citizens Day. Don't thank her... ask her for something. Advice, a recipe, how to fix a thing. Being asked is worth more than being thanked.

He's still sharp. She still drives. He still does his own taxes.

We mean it warmly. But look at what's underneath it — every one of those sentences quietly assumes that by now, he shouldn't be. The compliment is really surprise. And he can hear that as clearly as you can.

Tomorrow is National Senior Citizens Day. When Reagan signed the proclamation in 1988, the wording honored older Americans for what they'd achieved — and then, in the same breath, for all they continue to accomplish. Present tense. Not a thank-you note for a finished life.

So here's a suggestion for tomorrow. Instead of thanking him, ask him for something. Advice. A recipe. How to fix a thing.

Being asked is worth more than being thanked. It's the difference between being valued and being appreciated.

Ask your mother what she had for lunch yesterday and she may have to think about it.

Ask her the name of her second-grade teacher and it will come out without a pause.

That's not a lapse. Researchers describe something called the reminiscence bump — adults recall the years between about ten and thirty more sharply than any other stretch of life, because that's when everything was happening for the first time. The ten-thousandth ordinary Tuesday leaves no mark. The first day of first grade leaves a permanent one.

The buses started running again this week, which makes this the best month of the year to ask.

Some questions that work better than "tell me about when you were young":

Who was your first-grade teacher? How did you get to school? What did you carry your lunch in? What did the school smell like? What got you in trouble? What did you want to be back then?

Bring photographs if you have them. Bring pictures of your own kids on their first day this week — the comparison is usually where the best stories come out.

Write down what she says. Every family has one story they wish they'd gotten on paper.
