In Sanatana Dharma, puja serves as a reminder that spirituality is not only something we think about, it is something we actively express through loving service, ritual, and reverence. 🕊

The word puja is often translated as "worship," but could perhaps be better understood as an act of loving connection, an honoring, or devotion.

A simple way to understand puja is: "an outward expression of inward devotion."

During puja we make offerings that represent the offering of ourselves: our thoughts, actions, and intentions.

Offerings may include:
🌹 Flowers
💨 Incense
🕯 Light (lamps or candles)
💦 Water
🍓 Food
📿 Mantras and prayers
🎶 Music or chanting

The purpose of puja is not to ask for something, but to cultivate:
🙏 Devotion (Bhakti)
😍 Gratitude
🧘‍♀️ Presence and mindfulness
🕉️ A deeper relationship with the Divine
💚 Purification of the heart and mind

Puja can be elaborate, such as a temple ceremony performed by a priest, or very simple, such as lighting a candle, offering a flower, and sitting in prayer at a home altar.

What is your favorite way to celebrate the divine?

Feeling a little overheated? Irritable or agitated? 🥵

That's your pitta dosha talking to you - the fire element within our bodies that tends to increase during the summer.

That agitation you’re feeling is your body asking to slow down, cool down and practice some grounding. Balasana - wide kneed child’s pose is perfect for this! 👶

This pose practiced during the heat of the summer can:
✨Calms the nervous system and reduces irritability
✨Gently cools excess heat and agitation
✨Promotes deep, relaxed breathing
✨Encourage the body to slow down and rest
✨Grounds scattered energy and helps conserve vitality

Spend about 3 - 5 minutes practicing this restoring pose, in a nice cool place, breathing slowly. Imagine each inhale bringing nourishing cool air into the body and each exhale releasing excess heat. 🌬

Make this pose work for you! Too much pressure on the knees? Try a blanket in between the legs and buttocks!

Can't get your head all the way down to the mat? Support under the head!

Allow your body to get acquainted with the pose and try different variations until it feels right for you!

Summer is a time to practice less intensely and more intentionally, focusing on nourishing the energy instead of expending it. 🌻

📚 Ahimsa - the practice of non-violence 🕊

This practice of non-violence isn’t only toward all beings but also toward ourselves.

It is more than not hurting others. It’s a way of cultivating kindness and compassion through our thoughts, words AND actions for ALL beings big and small. 🐜

In daily life, ahimsa can look like speaking gently, choosing compassion over judgment, and honoring the needs of your own body, mind and heart.

It invites us to soften our reactions and meet each moment with greater care.

When we live with ahimsa, we begin to see that peace is not something outside of us, it is something we actively practice, moment by moment. ⏱

How do you practice ahimsa?
