Today Marks the 36th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. 🔴

Former President George H.W. Bush signed the fledgling bill into law on July 26, 1990. His doing so, by unilaterally supporting a virtuous cause without partisan inhibitions, bridged an otherwise frustrating gap in American society and furthered American excellence. Our founding fathers were foremost enlightened thinkers, meaning that they valued empiricism, rationality, and logic as mechanisms for determining truth over dogma, superstition, and unimpeachable divine authority. Accordingly, they defined liberty in the negative - against the external pressure and coercion of King George III's tyranny - because that was where the overwhelming amount of empirical data was at the time. It was clear that monarchy - and by extension tyranny - were absolutely awful for the human experience, for freedom, and for individual self-determination. Thus, a necessary condition for freedom is the absence of unaccountable and unelected rulers.

This is an excellent foundation for an unrestrained and prosperous society. Still, for liberty to be complete, to fully realize its promise, it must run downstream from the idea of positive liberty. First narrowly defined by philosopher Immanuel Kant, positive and negative liberty can most easily be understood as both the "freedom from" and the "freedom to." Negative liberty is the freedom from tyranny and oppression, whereas "freedom to" is your material ability to do things and self-actualize.

Philosopher Isaiah Berlin correctly identified that negative liberty without positive liberty is functionally impotent. Consider a person with a disability that necessitates the use of a wheelchair - it's wonderful that they are allowed to exist without question and that they are afforded the same protections under the law as everyone else, but what are they to do when, upon reaching the grocery store, they realize they can't get inside because there's no ramp? What good is their freedom from tyranny when they don't have the freedom to feed themselves?

The ADA filled precisely that gap, resolved the apparent paradox, by allowing people with disabilities to participate meaningfully in their communities and realize their right to self-determination through access. They were finally afforded autonomy over where they worked, where they shopped, etc. Beyond that, it's helped us realize our mission of empowering people with disabilities to lead fulfilling, independent lives. So, from everyone here at Threshold, thank you to all the brave people, legislators, and voters who made the ADA possible.

Happy National Self-Care Day! 🔴

Above, we've included a collage of all the ways our team members practice self-care, which is indispensable not only for mental health recovery, but also for a healthy life. Denying yourself relaxation triggers a stress response that floods your body with cortisol. Over time, elevated cortisol levels take a real toll on your immune system, heart health, sleep, and mental wellbeing. So, RELAX! It's good for you.

Meet Josh: Mosaic House Member & Game Developer.

What if you could experience the Clubhouse model before ever walking through the door? That's exactly what Mosaic House member Josh set out to create. Josh used Google's AI Studio to build an original video game that simulates life inside a Clubhouse. The numbers-based RPG lets players earn tokens, grow their Clubhouse, and get a feel for the real Clubhouse model, all before becoming a member. Think Roller Coaster Tycoon, but for social rehabilitation.

Josh came to Mosaic House in 2017 with a lifelong love of video games and a pre-existing background in game development. He describes video games as "like an interactive novel," a way to explore new worlds, try new things, and discover what you love. When he learned about Mosaic House, he knew there had to be a more engaging way to introduce prospective members to the Clubhouse model than a standard video. So he built one.

Mosaic House helped Josh come out of his shell in ways he never expected. He told us that before MoHo, an interview like the one conducted for this post would have been unthinkable. Now, he says, he can "take it head on."
That growth is exactly what inspired the game. "It's come full circle, more or less," Josh said. He was once the new member finding his footing, and now he wants to make that path easier for someone else.

We couldn't be prouder, Josh.

Help our Unhoused Neighbors. 🔴

Threshold is running a clothing drive this summer on behalf of Hope Rescue Mission. We're looking for donations of gently used clothing for both men and women, with an urgent need for new men's undergarments, undershirts, and sweatpants (size M-###L). Please keep new clothing separate from used clothing, should you be kind enough to donate. Communities function best when their members look out for each other. Let's make that happen!

Happy Disability Pride Month! 🔴

July is Disability Pride Month, which commemorates the landmark passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. This was a huge moment for individuals living with disabilities because it effectively created a legal mechanism for enforcing "equality of access, " which allowed individuals to participate in society meaningfully. For example, prior to the ADA, businesses weren't mandated to be handicap accessible, but under the ADA, businesses must create a means of egress for those in wheelchairs. In essence, the ADA meant every American was guaranteed a seat at the table, regardless of their disability or disabilities.

Today, disability pride means "accepting and honoring each person's uniqueness and seeing it as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity," according to disability rights organizations and persons with disabilities. Our differences are what make American society so strong, innovative, and beautiful. Threshold is honored to support disability pride for this month and eternity.

Happy Semiquincentennial, America! 🔴

This year marks a truly historic milestone as our nation celebrates America's 250th birthday, a once-in-a-generation occasion honoring two and a half centuries of freedom, perseverance, and the enduring ideals of liberty that have shaped our country. It's a significant moment in our nation's history and an opportunity to reflect on our shared values of unity, service, and community.

We're proud to be an American organization that supports our most vulnerable citizens. Our nation's motto is more important now than ever: "E Pluribus Unum." Out of many, we are one great people and one even greater nation.

Here's to another 250 years of truth, justice, and the American way…
