Pathogenes Inc Pathogenes is a consulting company that conducts research on the diseases Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis and Polyneuritis equi. Pathogenes Inc.

We lead the PNE research field and are the best resource for veterinarians that want to understand and treat PNE. was founded in 1999 and is dedicated to the development of reagents to diagnose, treat, and prevent animal diseases. works with industry partners to facilitate development of their projects. Our ability to apply innovative techniques has helped produce novel products that benefit the animal health industry. We have active, collaborative partnerships with researchers in industry, universities, and individuals in the United States and Europe. We offer tech support to veterinarians that use our technology at our laboratory hotline. Pathogenes developed surface antigens from Sarcocystis neurona, for antibody detection in serum and CSF. We also created an equine animal model to advance the study of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) in horses. A reliable animal model allowed us to recognize early signs of EPM facilitating the design of early treatment protocols. Our animal model is used by industry partners to determine pathogenesis of disease as well as treatment and vaccine efficacy in horses. Pathogenes recognized and developed novel tissue culture techniques that are used to create new parasite vaccines. We continue to develop protocols and products that facilitate the understanding and treatment of disease and license our technology to further the health and well-being of animals.

Its EPM season!! Most horses with Sarcocystis neurona (the parasite causing Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, or EPM) show an onset of clinical signs or test positive most commonly during the summer and fall months.

That means the horses are exposed to oocysts shed by opossums that are active during the summer and fall...that doens't mean the horses have EPM, it means they get gut infections that resolve 99% of the time. These transient infections may induce protective immunity!

Researching EPM 2026 Polyneuritis explained.

PNE is presented as a rare, progressive inflammatory disease that damages the myelin surrounding horses’ peripheral nerves.

Early signs can be subtle and relapsing: behavior changes, abnormal sensitivity, muscle weakness or wasting, gait problems, facial or swallowing difficulties, and urinary or tail dysfunction.

The white papers argue that early disease may be treatable or reversible, while prolonged inflammation can cause nerve fibrosis and irreversible end-stage disease.

Diagnosis requires clinical history, repeated neurological examinations, differential diagnosis, and tests interpreted by disease stage; proposed markers include C-reactive protein and antibodies to myelin P2 proteins.

Owners and veterinarians are encouraged to document cases, monitor changes over time, participate in field studies, and support development of validated diagnostics and licensed treatments.

A protein is a biochemical entity. A protein is similar to a transformer...the movie Transformer. When a molecule binds, a molecule like a cytokine, the protein changes shape allowing new receptors that were previously hidden to be available. The protein transforms into a new chemical entity.That is how one protein can have multiple functions. It is important to know how drugs affect proteins and cytokines...concentration and context are important!
