Feeling anxious now that communities are reopening? Stop and smell the lavender

These have been anxious times, with people worried about their health and the health of loved ones, their livelihoods, their finances and the future of the state, the country and the world.
Do you have anxiety or nervous energy around the idea of reintegrating into society after social isolation during the coronavirus shutdown?

I'm noticing that it's on the minds of many people.
When we've slowly become cave dwellers, it's not that strange for humans to start a new normal: Staying inside and darting around to get supplies, then darting back home to take cover.
If you're finding it hard to break the cycle of being indoors, I'd like to offer some support from the plant kingdom.

One of the most popular, least expensive, safest and easiest essential oils to use is lavender essential oil, a medicinal plant extract known to help ease anxiety and nervousness, overcome fear and ease insomnia.
Lavender can go on the skin directly without being diluted. You can pour out a few drops and rub it into your hands, temples or forehead, or simply sniff the open bottle.
Researchers at the University of Miami found that people who inhaled lavender essential oil had increased calming beta waves in their brains.
It's pretty easy to put a few drops of lavender on your hands, rub your palms together and take a nice large inhalation from your hands. Consider doing that a few times a day to gain emotional balance.

Lavender's scent comes from the essential oils that are on its leaves. It not only repels mosquitoes but some say it stops the mosquito's ability to smell. (Photo: Jackie Malloy)
Historically, lavender is considered an antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-depressive, and is sedating. It's was traditionally used to calm a nervous stomach by rubbing lavender topically on the abdomen.
Lavender oil has also been shown to be effective when taken orally. Several clinical studies demonstrated the benefit of lavender extracts for internal use.

The most studied small gel-cap of lavender essential oil sold by a supplement company is called Lavela WS 1265. It's sold by Integrative Therapeutics and can be found online.
But I would start with topical and olfactory external use and see how it goes. Then if you're better, but feel you still need a little extra support consider internal use. This is the only oil I suggest using internally without help or training. My family, my patients and I have all had good success with the Lavela product.

You can order essential oils for external use online, buy from independent dealers like doTerra or Young Living or buy them at Orchard Nutrition Center and most Redding grocers like Raley's and Holiday Market.
As always, information about options for building health is not a substitute for medical care. Please see your doctor for health and information support. Get help from your doctor first if you're currently on medication for anxiety, depression or high blood pressure.

Stem cell treatment works for many, but insurance doesn't cover it

Still waiting for stem cell treatments to come to a doctor's office near you?
It seems like a decade or two since we were introduced to stem cell research and treatments, and told that, through them, we might beat the degradation of a dreaded disease, recover from an injury or a degenerated joint, and that all these could be things of the past.
All we'd need to do was get an injection of our own stem cells and like magic we'd be up and running again almost like new. Let the body heal itself. Sounds like a dream.
Well in some circles this is more than a dream: It’s happening.
Recently I spoke with Mark Berman, a doctor in Beverly Hills, about his Cell Surgical Network: A more than decade-old business that's busy advancing medical research by using a network of doctor's following specific stem cell protocols. He networks with over 100 doctors in the U.S. and abroad who are enthusiastic about the potential of stem cells and want to see stem cell treatments become a normal part of health care.

To have a better idea of the protocol, I visited the office of long-time Redding physician Robert Ghelfi, who is in Berman's network. Ghelfi is the medical director of the Northern California Stem Cell Treatment Center that affiliates with several Redding physicians.
He explained the stem cell extraction method: Take a little fat from the patient and spin it to separate the stem cells. Once separated, Ghelfi prepares the patient’s own stem cells for injection into the injured, damaged or degenerating site on the patient's body. It seems like a surprisingly simple and straightforward procedure. It typically takes one injection, Ghelfi said, and the visit lasts about an hour.

Stem cells are attracted to injured, damaged or ill-performing tissue, Berman and Ghelfi explained. Once injected into the region, they begin to heal and regenerate tissue.
How effective is it?
It depends on the area of the body and the problem.
Both Berman and Ghelfi mentioned the 83% success rate they've had with injecting over 6,000 degenerated knees. This treatment is popular with people who opted not to have a knee replacement surgery.

A complication with younger people getting knee replacements is the need for another replacement years later, since the first can wear out. With stem cell therapy, this problem can be avoided, Ghelfi said.
Research shows success with other conditions as well.
For his part, Ghelfi is impressed by the research, and his own clinical experience, using stem cells for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Under the heading of COPD falls chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Since chronic bronchitis usually progresses to emphysema, Ghelfi’s goal is to try to stabilize pulmonary function.
"This is a huge improvement for COPD since the rate of decline annually is four percent," he said. And since pulmonary function is easily measurable, it works nicely for research data.

Success has been reported by injecting stem cells into disc protrusions, thumbs, fingers, wrists, elbows, ankles, hips, necks, backs, tendons and for treating non-healing wounds, congestive heart failure, Parkinson's disease, peripheral neuropathy, asthma, multiple sclerosis, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
As research continues to be compiled by participating doctors, the body of work into stem cell applications increases.
Berman and Ghelfi are both surgeons who've become interested in stem cell therapies because of the results they’ve achieved, their ease of use and lack of side effects.
Stem cell research is still in its relative infancy, and I have no doubt that these pioneers will be moving the needle in healthcare not only in the United States, but worldwide.
Note: This stem cell procedure is not covered by insurance and the cost is between $5,000 and $7,000 for treatment, Ghelfi said. If you think you have a health situation that might benefit from stem cell treatment, he offers a free consultation.
Research and treatments have shown promise. More options are always good.

Here are 13 local restaurants that serve organic food

What do I look for in a restaurant? It’s simple: Clean food: Not a lot of pesticides on the vegetables, a commitment to not use flavor enhancers or preservatives, meat without added growth hormones.
I like meat to contain the healthy fats and nutrients that come from traditional methods of grazing management. This preference is quickly growing in popularity with people in Redding.
If you're one of those people, here are some restaurants you might like to try:

1. The newest kid on the block is Norm's farm-to-table restaurant in Palo Cedro. They serve grass-fed Belcampo beef from Siskiyou County. Early reviews are ecstatic.
2. Le Testimony is a new organic restaurant in the Holiday Market Shopping Center on Placer Street and Buenaventura in west Redding. They have many menu items but are most proud of their crepes, salads, breakfasts and their ability to adapt a recipe to accommodate those with special needs or food allergies.
3. Roots Juice Bar has two locations in Redding. They serve organic food and juice with a focus on smoothies, bowls, wraps and fresh- squeezed juice combinations. The downtown location has a convenient drive-thru.
4. Fresh Fire Grill in Palo Cedro and on Lake Boulevard in Redding boasts organic chicken, Prather Ranch beef burgers, organic salads and several fresh juice options like “the rainbow” juice made from beet, celery, kale, cucumber, apple, lemon and ginger. This Asian fusion restaurant is a must-try.
5. Cafe Paradisio on Butte Street in downtown Redding has several organic salad options along with wild Alaskan salmon, organic chicken, beef and duck. I recently had their Zen bowl and it was delicious.
6. Moonstone Bistro on Placer Street in west Redding makes homemade soup stock, carries both Prather Ranch beef and special cuts of grass-fed beef. Along with Mary’s Organic chicken they offer many organic and local vegetables including the “big salad,” a feast of organic vegetables topped with a delicious house-made dressing.
7. Country Organics on Bechelli Lane in east Redding continues their restaurant named Cashew. It offers organic wraps, salads and bowls. It's known for great-tasting sauces. They continue to expand their menu items and are open until 6 p.m. on weeknights.
8. View 202 on Hemsted off Cypress Avenue in Redding offers Prather Ranch burgers, grass-fed Niman Ranch steak and uses Mary’s Organic poultry in some of its dishes. On Friday and Saturday it has hickory-smoked Niman Ranch prime rib. Don’t miss the restaurant's farm-to-table salad with local fruits and vegetables.
9. Mosaic Restaurant at Turtle Bay on Sundial Bridge Drive offers organic eggs in some of its dishes or you can substitute organic eggs if they’re not offered in your desired dish.
10. Asis Juicery on Hilltop Drive now has organic salads. They're known for their juice combinations, smoothies and sweet treats — that are actually pretty healthy.
11. Sweet Spot on Hilltop Drive next to Cicada Cantina is churning out a sixteen-hour bone broth with ramen and vegetables. Not only is it warm and delicious but the broth is made in the traditional way to increase the nutrition of the soup. They have many flavors and specials. Recently the line up included Chicken Tantanmen Ramen, which is marinated chicken with chicken sesame broth topped with spicy chili oil and Veggie Miso Ramen filled with mushrooms, bok choy, ginger, leeks and miso.
12. Orchard Nutrition on Athens Avenue in Redding has a great deli counter with many organic “grab and go” options to take home, to work or for an outing. It also makes fresh juices and often has some pre-juiced ready and waiting.
13. The Woodside Grill at the Gaia Hotel is proud of their offerings. They boast Hat Creek Grown beef, buffalo from Bison Rock Ranch, sprouts from Little Sprouts Organic Micro Farm, pork and heirloom beans from Rancho Llano Seco and poultry and rabbit from Brush Arbor Farmstead.
I’ve probably missed some local offerings so please send me an email and tell me what your favorites are, and we can all get a little healthier and have fun dining out.
A big thank you to readers for keeping me updated on the many changes and additions to our local healthy food scene. I'm so proud this list continues to grow and develop.

Looking for some easy tricks to help relieve stress?

Head back in time.
I mean way back, to prehistoric times.
For nearly 40 years the book “The Expressive Arts Therapies” by Elaine and Bernard Feder has waited patiently on my bookshelf for me to read it.
It finally happened. I’m glad. And I want to share some of what I learned.
According to the authors of this book, art had specific functions in society way back when. It was much more than aesthetic.
Art was used as a way to treat mental and physical disorders, to create word pictures, to invoke rain and fertility, or to communicate with others or higher powers. Drawing and painting had a specific purpose: To help societies become healthier, more balanced, to even survive.
It had little to do with painting a picture for everyone to admire or put in a collection or to improve the look of your living space.
Painting can help release pent-up energy or stress on to the paper, canvas or --- as with the El Castillo Cave Paintings --- the cave wall.
The main idea is that drawing or painting helps the release of pent-up energy or stress on to the paper, or canvas, or the cave wall. This may release and soothe frustration, grief, sadness, anger, etc. As a result, this may bring a sense of calm and a feeling of relief.
The same idea applies to music and dance. In early cultures, sound and movement were part of healing and a way to communicate. Drums and instruments were used to heal. These expressive therapies were just that: Therapy.
Why is this important?
Because we can shift the way we look at singing, dance, drawing, crafting, scrapbooking, photography, the playing of musical instruments, quilting, artistic cooking and baking, etc. This shift can help us schedule and plan time for ourselves to heal through these expressive arts.
So here's your homework:
Winter is the perfect time to get some yarn, a camera, a guitar, a paintbrush and just start honing simple creative skills. If you find that you like it, then take a class and do it for your pleasure and for your healing.
When it just feels right to you, you'll know why. It's how it's always been. It's how those who've come before you helped themselves survive and thrive during tough times and good times.
I have no doubt that our future will include both: More ups and more downs, and certainly more stress. So get moving on a little old-fashioned self-care to create a better tomorrow.
