WHAT IS A PSMA PET SCAN FOR PROSTATE CANCER?
A PSMA PET scan is an advanced medical imaging test used to detect prostate cancer, specifically targeting prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) proteins and locating cancer spread or recurrence.
How It Works
Radioactive Tracer: A safe, tiny amount of a radioactive drug is injected into a vein.
Cell Targeting: The tracer travels through the blood and sticks directly to the PSMA protein on prostate cancer cells.
Scanning: A PET machine detects the tracer to create clear pictures of where the cancer cells are located.
Why It Is Used
Finding Spread: It spots small areas of cancer that standard scans (like regular CT or bone scans) often miss.
Staging Disease: It helps doctors see if newly diagnosed, high-risk cancer has moved to lymph nodes or other parts of the body.
Checking Recurrence: It tracks down the source of rising PSA levels after prior treatments

WHAT IS NUCLEAR MEDICINE IMAGING?

Nuclear medicine imaging is a non-invasive diagnostic method that uses small amounts of radioactive materials (called radiotracers) to evaluate how organs and tissues are functioning. Unlike traditional X-rays or CT scans that focus strictly on anatomy, these tracers emit energy that is mapped by specialized cameras to show cellular activity and blood flow.
