Today we celebrate Women Veterans Day: a commemoration of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948. Women have been important contributors in every major conflict in American history, all the way back to the Revolutionary War. Often, they do not receive the recognition or benefits their male counterparts receive.

The signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members of the United States military.

We are proud to be home to 10 women veterans at the Veterans Home of California - Redding (one not featured). It is our honor and privilege to care for and celebrate these women trailblazers, not just today, but every day!

Thank you to women veterans everywhere - your service to our nation is appreciated!

We had a fabulous time recently with the U.S. Forest Service's Redding Smokejumpers who are conveniently located just down the street from our Home. We were fortunate enough to catch them before fire season keeps them busy for a tour of their base facility, and WOW what an experience!

Did you know?

The Redding base is one of seven across the country and the only one located in California. The Pacific Southwest Region of the U.S. Forest Service manages 20 million acres of national forest land in California and assists state and private forest landowners in California, Hawaii and U.S-affiliated Pacific Islands. Eighteen national forests in this region range from the North Coast, Cascade and Sierra Nevada ranges, from Big Sur to the Mexican border in the south Coast range.

Smokejumpers travel all over the country, including Alaska, to provide highly trained, experienced firefighters and leadership for quick initial attack on wildland fires in remote areas. Firefighting tools, food and water are dropped by parachute to the firefighters after they land near the fire making them self-sufficient for the first 48 hours. Most smokejumpers work from late spring through early fall.

Thank you, U.S. Forest Service, for your service to our communities and for the tour! Stay safe out there.

Our residents had a wonderful time recently at Stilt House Pottery, picking out pre-made pieces and bringing them to life with their own creativity and imagination! There was so many different pieces to choose from, and our amazing host made the experience fun, easy, and welcoming for everyone.

We had the place all to ourselves, making it a special and relaxed outing on a beautiful day. Everyone truly showed their creative side, and we can’t wait to pick up the final pieces and see all the finished masterpieces!

What a wonderful day we had for our “Behind the Wings” outing at the Redding Regional Airport!

Our residents enjoyed a special behind-the-scenes tour and Q&A from the airport manager, assistant manager, SkyWest manager, and manager from control tower, who is also an Air Force veteran. We also got an up-close look out on the tarmac where we watched a few planes, a special private jet, and a Cal Fire helicopter land and take off. It was an exciting and busy day!

A huge thank you to the staff at the Redding Regional Airport ort for making our veterans feel so welcomed and appreciated.

We ended the day with a delicious lunch at Peter Chu’s Skyroom where we enjoyed great food, wonderful company, and more plane watching right from our seats. Our residents truly had a wonderful time and felt extra special throughout the day.

Please meet Fuzzy, our featured resident artist for May!

Fuzzy is a Navy veteran residing at our Home who has been doing art for the vast majority of his life. He even spent some time 60 years ago studying at the Rhode Island School of Design. Fuzzy is incredibly talented and his room is filled with many, many pieces of his beautiful artwork.

His favorite type of art is — you guessed it — drawing portraits!

What a wonderful afternoon of learning and laughter on the bocce ball court!

Our resident Frank P. shared his passion and love for the game of bocce ball with a couple of our Klamath residents during a fun morning out on the court. Frank truly went the extra mile — preparing packets, setting up the court, explaining the game, and encouraging everyone along the way. Janet also joined in to help demonstrate how to play, and soon our residents were out giving it a try! Larry even joined Frank for a fun match while Claude and several RCFE residents cheered everyone on from the sidelines.

One special moment was a rare “bocce kiss” — when the bocce balls land touching the pallino!

It was a beautiful sunny day filled with encouragement, teamwork, and connection. This was just the beginning, and next time we plan to bring even more residents out to enjoy and learn this fun game together.

Thank you, Frank and Janet, for sharing your time, knowledge, and passion with us. We’re already looking forward to the next bocce afternoon!

To begin our Memorial Day observance yesterday, our Home's Administrator, Jessica Koppes, read the Governor’s Memorial Day proclamation, setting a meaningful and reflective tone for the day.

Following the reading of the proclamation, some of our residents were honored to attend the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo.

It was a beautiful, cool and slightly breezy Memorial Day filled with reflection, gratitude, and love for one another and our country. Our residents joined fellow veterans, families, and community members from across the north state to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

The heartfelt speakers, moving wreath-laying ceremony, and overwhelming support from our wonderful community truly touched everyone in attendance. We were warmly welcomed and deeply appreciated the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful, moving, and poignant tribute to our nation's heroes.

As we paused together in remembrance, we were reminded that freedom is never free and that the sacrifices of our fallen heroes will never be forgotten.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this day so special.
