Anger is an emotion. And remember, we need to feel it in order to heal.
If we continually push anger down, rush past it, or tell ourselves we shouldn't feel it, we may never get curious about what our heart is actually trying to communicate. And unfelt anger can manifest in other ways.... physically (headaches, surge of energy, grinding teeth, feeling hot, clenched fists, etc) or emotionally (we blow up on others). Because underneath anger, there are our tender emotions. Sad, scared, lonely. Sometimes anger is simply the emotion we can access before we're ready to touch what's tender underneath it. So yes, it is important to make space for us to feel anger.
But my rules on how we express it is:
Our anger doesn't get to hurt us, and it doesn't get to hurt someone else.
Not verbally.
Not mentally.
Not physically.
Feeling anger and directing anger at another person are two very different things. Your anger belongs to you. Even when it feels like, "You made me angry." Even when another person's behavior triggered it. Even when there is a very real situation happening outside of you. The emotion arising inside of you is still your emotion. Your heart. Your experience. And instead of handing that anger to someone else—or turning it against yourself—you can pause and be with it....to feel it. Let it move through you without using it as a weapon. And when the intensity (90 seconds for an emotion to last when it's fully felt), when it begins to soften, perhaps ask:
What's underneath my anger? Do I feel scared? Do I feel lonely? Do I feel sad because I felt so wronged? That's often where tenderness begins. We don't become tender-hearted by refusing to feel the emotions that don't look tender. Sometimes we have to compassionately meet the anger first. Feel it. Don't weaponize it. Then listen for the heart underneath it. ♥️ Hopefully this makes sense! If not, you're welcome to reach out to me! 🙌
