Red flag: with numb feet, an infection may not hurt. Your eyes and nose may notice it before you feel it. ⚠️

Call your wound team the same day if you see:
❗ Redness that spreads past the edge of a wound
❗ New swelling, or skin that feels warmer than the other foot
❗ Pus, cloudy drainage or a bad smell
❗ Pain that is new or getting worse
❗ Fever, chills, or blood sugars that suddenly run high

Fever with a red, hot or swollen foot? Get care right away, don't wait for your next appointment.

Caregivers: what helps you spot changes, a daily photo, a mirror, or a quick look at sock time?

Not sure if it's serious? Call your wound team and ask. That's what they're there for.

Myth: "My house is safe, so going barefoot at home is fine." 🏠

With diabetes or numb feet, many foot wounds start indoors. A dropped pin, a toy or a stubbed toe can go unnoticed for days.

Simple habits that protect your feet at home:
βœ… Keep a pair of house shoes by the bed and the door
βœ… Pick hard soles with closed toes, not floppy slippers or flip-flops
βœ… Put shoes on for night trips to the bathroom, and keep a nightlight on
❌ Don't walk barefoot, even on carpet or around the pool
βœ… Stepped on something or stubbed a toe? Look at your foot right away

What do you or your loved one wear on your feet around the house?

Small cut or scrape that isn't healing after a few days? Let your wound team take a look.

Red flag: heating pads and hot water bottles can burn numb feet without you feeling it. πŸ”₯

Cold weather is coming. Ways to keep feet warm safely:
βœ… Wear warm, dry socks, even to bed
βœ… Test bath water with your hand or elbow first, or use a thermometer
βœ… Use an extra blanket instead of direct heat
❌ No heating pads, hot water bottles or space heaters close to your feet
βœ… Check feet daily for redness, blisters or color changes

What helps you or your loved one stay warm on chilly nights?

See a burn, blister or a foot that stays cold or changes color? Call your wound team.

Tip: your socks can protect your feet, or quietly hurt them. 🧦

What to look for in a good sock:
βœ… Put on a clean, dry pair every day (change sooner if they get damp)
βœ… Choose soft socks with flat or no seams that won't rub
βœ… Light colors make it easier to spot blood or drainage
❌ Tight elastic tops that leave deep marks can squeeze blood flow
βœ… Pull socks smooth, with no bunching or wrinkles inside the shoe

What kind of socks feel best on your feet, or the feet of the person you care for?

When you take your socks off, check them for spots, then check your feet.

Red flag: a nail trimmed too short or dug out at the corner can turn into an infected toe, especially with diabetes. βœ‚οΈ

Safer nail care at home:
βœ… Trim straight across, not curved down into the corners
βœ… Trim after a bath or shower, when nails are softer
βœ… Smooth sharp edges with a nail file
❌ Don't dig at ingrown corners or cut calluses yourself
βœ… If you can't see or reach your feet well, ask for help or see a foot doctor

Who trims the toenails in your home: you, a family member, or a foot doctor?

Thick, curved or painful nails? Ask your foot doctor or wound team about safe trimming.

Tip: if you have a wound on the bottom of your foot, every step presses on it. Taking that pressure off helps it heal. 🦢

This is called "offloading":
βœ… Pressure from standing and walking can keep a wound from closing
βœ… Wear the boot, shoe or cast your wound team gives you, every time you're on your feet
βœ… Even short trips, like to the kitchen or bathroom, add up
βœ… Don't go barefoot or in socks only, even at home
βœ… Ask about a walker, crutches or knee scooter if they could help

If you've had to stay off a foot wound, what helped you stick with it day to day?

Ask your wound team which offloading option is right for you.

Myth: "My foot wound will heal on its own, whatever my blood sugar does." In fact, high sugar can slow healing. 🩸

Why blood sugar matters for foot wounds:
βœ… High sugar makes it harder for your body to repair skin and fight germs
βœ… Check your sugar as often as your doctor advises
βœ… Take your diabetes medicines as prescribed
βœ… Tell your care team if your readings keep running high
βœ… Steady numbers help your wound care work better

For someone living with diabetes, what makes it hardest to keep blood sugar steady?

Check your feet every day, and ask your wound team about any sore that isn't getting better.

Healing tip: add a little protein to every meal. Your body uses it to rebuild skin. πŸ₯š

When you have a wound, what you eat helps it close:
βœ… Protein at each meal: eggs, fish, chicken, beans, yogurt or cottage cheese
βœ… If big meals feel like too much, try smaller ones more often
βœ… Sip water through the day. Being dry slows healing.
βœ… Skipping meals or eating very little can slow healing
βœ… If you have kidney disease or diabetes, ask before you change your diet

What's an easy protein-rich snack that works for you or the person you care for?

Ask your wound team or a dietitian what's right for you.

Ever heard of helping a wound heal by breathing oxygen? 🫁

It's called hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Here's the basics:

βœ… What it is: You breathe 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. This gets extra oxygen into your blood and tissues, which can help healing and fighting infection.
βœ… Who it may help: Some people with deeper diabetic foot wounds that haven't healed after about a month of good wound care.
βœ… What a session is like: About 1.5–2 hours. You lie back, rest or watch TV. Your ears may pop, like on a plane. Most people go on weekdays for several weeks.
βœ… It's an add-on, not a replacement: Taking pressure off the foot, blood sugar control, good dressings and healthy circulation still matter most.

It doesn't help every wound, so ask your wound team if HBOT could be right for yours.

Have you or someone you care for ever had HBOT? What was it like?

The 10-g monofilament alone can miss early neuropathy. A new ALPS implementation roadmap (JAPMA 2026; Rogers, Armstrong, Frykberg et al.) calls for testing both small- and large-fiber function, screening at type 2 diagnosis and at least annually, and turning the exam into a plan: loss of protective sensation, PAD, deformity, or a prior ulcer should set footwear, follow-up, and referral. Limb preservation starts before the wound. limbpreservationsociety.org/news/alps-brings-international-experts-together-to-turn-diabetic-neuropathy-guidelines-into-action
