Federal Loan Changes Impacting PT Students

On April 30, 2026, the Department of Education finalized a rule reclassifying physical therapy programs as “graduate degree programs,” significantly reducing federal student loan limits.

Under the new rule:
💰 Graduate programs: $20,500/year | $100,000 total
💰 Professional programs (previous PT classification): $50,000/year | $200,000 total

This change will cut borrowing capacity in half, creating new financial barriers for future physical therapy students and potentially worsening health care workforce shortages.

Congress is already responding with proposed legislation (H.R. 6574, H.R. 6677/S. 4039, H.R. 6718) to protect student access and affordability.

Are you in need of food resources? Hopelink recently expanded their Redmond Food Market with a Saturday pilot day. This is a great option for those who may not be able to visit during the week. Everyone in the community is welcome to shop. Hopelink also added a new Mobile Market stop at Overlake Park Presbyterian Church on Wednesdays from 1 - 2 p.m. This is another opportunity for community members to access fresh, nutritious food in a convenient location.
