I get it. Being organized and productive has a lot of positives. Your are likely a high achiever in your career and make the most out of your time. Those are great strengths. However, perfectionism has its struggles, too. It’s hard to try and get everything “right” all the time. Did you know that not all couples fight the same way? Therapist Sue Johnson has identified three distinct conflict styles of distressed couples. Today, we are looking at the "Protest Polka" style.

These couples are characterized by one member who often criticizes and one who withdraws. The "critic" is seeking connection while the withdrawer is seeking safety and neither member is getting their needs met. Neither connection or safety are found and the relationship instead becomes lonely and unsafe for the partners.

These couples are always on edge. They are always anticipating the next attack and become focused on finding the "bad guy," the one who is to blame. Accusing, criticizing, and shaming is the norm. These couples usually have lost the ability to confide in their partner, meaning safety is gone and defenses are up.
