Cancer can grow silently for a long time before any symptoms appear.

That delay is one of the biggest reasons diagnoses often happen later than expected. Cancer cells can multiply into billions before a tumor becomes large enough to detect or causes noticeable changes in the body.

This is why prevention and routine screening are so important. Screening tests are designed to find cancer early, often before symptoms start, when treatment options are more effective and outcomes can be improved.

Understanding how cancer develops helps highlight just how powerful early detection can be.

More than 18.6 million people in the United States are living with a history of cancer, thanks to continued advances in research and treatment.

But survivorship is not the finish line. 1 in 4 survivors reports a poor physical quality of life, and many continue to face emotional and psychosocial challenges long after treatment ends.

This National Cancer Survivor Month, we honor how far we have come while also recognizing how far we still need to go. Survivorship means more than survival. It means quality of life, ongoing support, and care that addresses the whole person.

We need to do better, and that starts with awareness, advocacy, and action.
