Many rotator cuff tears—especially small or partial tears—can often be treated successfully without surgery. Conservative care, such as rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory treatment, and guided strengthening exercises, can reduce pain and improve shoulder function for many patients.
Surgery may be recommended when the tear is large or complete, when pain continues despite nonsurgical treatment, or when significant weakness affects your ability to work, play sports, or complete daily activities.
The most important step is getting an accurate diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan. Every shoulder injury is different, and the right approach depends on your symptoms, goals, and overall health.
