Meet the team behind the Apprenticeship College of Health! ☕️🤝

Last week, functional and executive leaders from Reach University and the Healthcare Training Fund convened in Seattle, Washington, to further advance the Apprenticeship College of Health (ACH).

The teams spent time developing a shared vision for the next phase of growth and expansion, setting priorities and strengthening the collaboration needed to build practical pathways into behavioral health careers in Washington state and beyond.

Last week's work reinforced a defining principle of ACH: lasting innovation is built through strong partnerships, shared purpose, and the discipline to build together.

Members are advised to monitor local conditions and follow guidance from public health and emergency management officials, particularly regarding air quality, outdoor activities, and evacuation notices.

Last Monday marked the start of a new Introduction to Healthcare Employment and Apprenticeship Programs (IHAP) cohort! This four-week-long, free training program prepares participants to serve in entry-level service and technician roles in hospitals and clinics, explore paid apprenticeships, and pursue additional certifications in the healthcare field.

IHAP graduate Shonise said that the program provided ‘life-changing’ opportunities for her and helped her find her calling: “Helping others really opened up my heart to healthcare. If I have the ability to change one life for the better, I will. IHAP is not just a program for the community, it’s a family that brings the best out in you!”

🔊“Stop making students choose between college and a paycheck.”🔊

That idea is at the heart of the Apprenticeship Degree, and it is especially urgent in behavioral health.

For working adults, traditional college pathways can mean stepping away from income, taking on debt, or trying to fit school around jobs, caregiving, and the realities of adult life. For employers and communities, those barriers keep talented people from entering and advancing in the behavioral health workforce.

The Apprenticeship College of Health (ACH), a strategic partnership between Reach University and the Healthcare Training Fund, offers a different path.
ACH helps working adults prepare for in-demand behavioral health roles through an Apprenticeship Degree pathway that connects rigorous college learning with paid, on-the-job experience.

For funders, ACH represents a practical investment in access, mobility, and workforce capacity: a way to reduce barriers for learners while helping employers build talent from within.

🔨 The Apprenticeship College of Health is building something new for healthcare: college that starts where learners already are, on the job, in their communities, and ready to grow. At the center of that effort is Executive Dean, Dr. Metoka Welch, a licensed mental health counselor turned academic leader whose career has been shaped by a single conviction: that the best education happens when classroom and practice are one and the same.

💡 We sat down with Dr. Welch to learn more about her vision for ACH, what drives her commitment to working adults, and what success really looks like when a college puts its learners first.
