Whats the difference between a figure 8 TMS coil versus an H1 TMS coil? Here at Eastside Psychiatry and TMS - we choose Magstim TMS technology for their precision, comfort, low seizure risk and over 16,000 published studies in neuroscientific and clinical research.
Precision/Focality — The Figure-8 produces a much more focused field, concentrating stimulation on a small, targeted cortical area (roughly 1–3 cm²). This lets you target the DLPFC precisely and reproducibly.
Better spatial targeting — Because the field is focal, it pairs well with anatomical or MRI-guided localization. You can hit a specific spot and know you're not spilling into surrounding regions.
Lower stimulation of off-target areas — Less spread means fewer unintended effects on adjacent cortex, which can mean better tolerability for some patients.
Longer track record / more devices — Figure-8 systems (e.g., Magstim technology) are the most widely used, with a large body of efficacy data and standardized protocols.
Lower seizure risk profile in practice — The smaller stimulated volume is often cited as a theoretical advantage, though seizure risk is very low with both when protocols are followed.
More precise motor threshold determination — The focal field makes it easier to isolate the motor hotspot when setting treatment intensity.
