Massachusetts Man Dies While Hiking On Mount Monadnock
A Massachusetts man tragically passed away on Saturday afternoon after suffering a medical emergency while hiking on Mount Monadnock.
The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Joshua Luth of Lancaster, Massachusetts.
Emergency Response on the Trail
According to New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers, the incident began around 4:11 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2026. Mountain Patrol Rangers at Monadnock State Park were alerted to a solo hiker in distress on the Cascade Link Trail, located roughly three-quarters of a mile from the Park Headquarters on Poole Road.
Good Samaritans discovered Luth on the trail and immediately called 911. As his condition rapidly deteriorated, the bystanders initiated CPR.
Conservation Officers rushed to the scene and immediately requested additional assistance from local emergency and fire departments due to the remote location.
A Massive Inter-Agency Effort
A massive rescue operation was launched, drawing a large contingent of first responders from across the region to assist in the evacuation and resuscitation efforts. Agencies aiding in the response included:
State & Law Enforcement: Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Jaffrey Police Department, and the Cheshire County Sheriff’s Dispatch Office.
Fire & Rescue Departments: Jaffrey, Rindge, Peterborough, Dublin, Troy, Keene, and New Ipswich Fire Departments, along with Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid.
Medical Services: Greatbrook Ambulance, Jaffrey Rindge Memorial Ambulance, and Massachusetts Lifeflight.
Despite the exhaustive and coordinated efforts of the bystanders and the numerous emergency crews on the scene, Luth succumbed to the medical event and was pronounced deceased.
"Despite the best efforts of all involved, the hiker... succumbed to the medical event he sustained while hiking," Fish and Game officials said in a statement.
The exact cause of the medical emergency remains under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
