Some signs of physical therapy concerns are easy to spot. Others are easy to miss.

Physical therapy can support so much more than walking, including gross motor skills, balance, coordination, strength, endurance, mobility, and confidence.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your child might benefit from physical therapy, this post is for you. 💚

Early support can help children build strength, confidence, and the skills they need to participate successfully at home, at school, and in the community.

August: Ask an RSI Expert

❓ How can I practice speech therapy with my child at home?

"Take advantage of times when you have your child's undivided attention to reinforce and practice what they are working on during their speech therapy sessions. The car, for example, is a great place to model 5 high frequency target words. Even if your child isn’t willing or able to say them back to you it provides good auditory bombardment." -Cara Butler MS, CCC-SLP

This is why we do what we do. Thank you for sharing your experience and for trusting us. Reviews like this mean so much to our therapists and our entire team.

"We had such an amazing experience with Rehab Specialists of Idaho! As first time parents, it can be difficult to know if you are doing the right thing for your baby, but we always felt like our input was valued and that the staff was excited to see us each week. Stacie was so sweet and supportive while working with our infant daughter (8 months-13 months)....We saw night and day improvements with our child’s crawling, sitting, walking and flexibility. We are so grateful! Thank you for treating us like family and for helping our daughter! ❤️" - Kallie

Overheard in Pediatric Occupational Therapy: "Let's see if both hands can work together as a team."

Bilateral coordination is the ability to use both sides of the body together in a coordinated way.

Kids use bilateral coordination every day when they:
• Tie their shoes
• Cut with scissors
• Catch a ball
• Get dressed
• Open containers
• Write while stabilizing paper

Activities like this paddle/balloon 🎈 game help children practice using both sides of their body together while improving coordination, attention, and motor planning.

Bilateral coordination is a foundational skill frequently addressed in both occupational therapy and physical therapy to help children become more independent and successful in everyday activities.

If you feel that your child could use some help developing their bilateral coordination, call or text any of our clinics.

❓ Why does my child's occupational therapy session sometimes just look like play?

"For kids of all ages, play is the most important occupation. Play is how they learn important life skills. This means as occupational therapy practitioners, we use play to address skills like handwriting, fine motor grasp patterns, visual scanning, social skills, attention, sequencing, and so much more. Plus, by using activities that are motivating to our kiddos, we are able to keep their interest and get them to engage in tasks that challenge them." -Emily Weimer COTA/L

Overheard in Occupational Therapy: Learning to lose is a skill

With the World Cup getting everyone excited about soccer, here's a little therapy secret:

Sometimes our therapists intentionally beat the kids at the games they're playing.

Why?

Because learning how to lose is an important life skill, too! When an OT helps a child practice losing they are teaching them:

⚽ Emotional regulation when things don't go their way
⚽ Flexible thinking when plans change
⚽ Frustration tolerance during difficult tasks
⚽ Good sportsmanship with peers
⚽ Problem-solving after mistakes

Board games, soccer, obstacle courses, and relay races give kids a safe place to practice handling disappointment, managing frustration, staying flexible, and being a good sport when things don't go their way.

The goal in these kinds of treatment plans is to help them learn what to do when life doesn't hand them a win....and sometimes that lesson starts with losing a soccer game to your therapist! ⚽
