I firmly believe that being kind and being nice are NOT the same thing. Kindness is rooted in honesty, respect, and genuinely wanting to lift others up. Being “nice” can sometimes mean avoiding honesty, ignoring boundaries, or saying things that feel good in the moment but may hurt someone in the long run.

At camp, we focus on kindness because it feels different, it requires thought. Kindness allows kids to be caring while still setting healthy boundaries, speaking honestly, and respecting themselves and others. Those are the kinds of skills that build strong relationships and confident kids. 🤍

Respect [Part 2] 🤍
We can't teach understanding, but this definition of respect is the goal. Our interactive interventions are designed with the hope that kids can feel and understand that others are important and deserve appropriate treatment and regard.

Here’s a simple intervention we did last year: Pass the Picture 🎨

It may not look like much at first glance, but activities like this are packed with opportunities for growth. The kids practiced frustration tolerance when the drawing didn’t go the way they imagined, acceptance of others’ ideas and creativity, and boundaries by learning to only control their own part of the picture instead of everyone else’s.

Most importantly, they had fun. They laughed, created together, and built skills without even realizing how much they were learning in the process. Sometimes the simplest activities end up teaching the biggest lessons.

Boundaries are meant to help keep our bodies, and emotions safe. They connect so closely with our other group values — safety, respect, honesty, and kindness. Setting boundaries helps others understand how we expect to be treated, while also teaching kids how to communicate their needs in healthy ways.

One of the biggest things we teach in group is that boundaries are not about controlling other people. Boundaries are about what we will do to take care of ourselves. As kids, parents and other trusted adults help guide boundaries as they are learning. Shifting their understanding is powerful, and helping kids learn what and why boundaries are there can completely change the way they build relationships and navigate the world around them.🤍

Respect [Part 1] 🤍
All of our group values connect together, but respect is a big one. It’s a simple word with such important meaning. One of the ways we teach respect at camp is through boundaries. We talk about how setting boundaries helps others know how to respect us, and honoring other people’s boundaries teaches us how to respect them in return. These are skills that help kids build confidence, healthy friendships, and stronger relationships in every part of life.

Every day at camp, we talk about and practice our 4 group values: kindness, honesty, respect, and safety. These aren’t just camp rules — they’re life skills I truly believe can change the way kids grow, connect, and see themselves and others. I try to teach and model these values in every single group session, because the best place to start building a better world is with our kids. 💛

I went and visited a friend while out of town a few weeks ago and she had made this embroidered picture and a t-shirt for me. She is the embodiment of kindness. She brought together so many elements from my business as well as things I love. Kindness is one of our group values, and Jessica Koetting is a rockstar example of kindness.
