Rhinebeck Equine is an independently owned, exclusively equine, practice located in Dutchess County in the Hudson River Valley about 120 miles north of NYC. The practice was founded in the 1940s by Dr. Kenneth Gumaer and began its equine focus in 1967 when Dr. Paul Mountan joined Dr. Ronnie Miller. Renamed Rhinebeck Equine in 1996, the practice’s veterinarians have been providing quality care to t

he equine population of New York’s Hudson Valley for over 50 years. This experienced and trusted practice has progressively grown into a comprehensive ambulatory and referral clinic with twelve veterinarians, five intern veterinarians, and over 30 support staff. The Rhinebeck Equine LLP team offers a full spectrum of services to horses of all breeds, providing comprehensive equine health care, including services in the areas of surgery, sport horse care, lameness evaluations, pre-purchase exams, reproduction, neonatal care, internal medicine, ophthalmology, dentistry, and wellness care. Our referral hospital is staffed by board-certified specialists in equine surgery, internal medicine, theriogenology (reproduction), ophthalmology, dermatology, interns, and a team of highly experienced support personnel. The hospital enables Rhinebeck Equine LLP to provide cutting-edge treatment to its equine patients. Ambulatory veterinarians serving the surrounding area provide care from their fully equipped mobile units.

🎆Labor Day weekend often brings fireworks across the Hudson Valley in celebration. But as many of us know not everyone appreciates the festivities.

🎆 Here are some tips to keep your equine friends safe:

🗣️ Ask your neighbors if they plan on setting off fireworks over the holiday weekend.
🧨 Check your local social media pages for events with fireworks.
🐴 Keep horses stabled or confined to reduce the risk of them spooking and running away.
🌾 If appropriate, offer free choice hay to keep your equine friends busy. Some clients like using hay balls or hay nets.
💡 Keep the lights on in your barn to reduce the flashes from the fireworks.
🎶 Play music in the barn to reduce the noise from fireworks.
👂🏼For horses that are sensitive to the noise consider using ear plugs or special ear bonnets.
💊 You may want to discuss with your veterinarian the use of medication to help keep your equine friend quiet during the fireworks.

🧂 It is Throwback Thursday! It is probably safe to assume that every horse owner has a bag of Epsom salts in their first aid kit. But do you know the history of Epsom salts?

🧂 In 1618, Epsom salts were discovered by a farmer when his cows would not drink the well water in Epsom, England. The farmer drank the water which had a bitter taste. Further research by the farmer led him to discover both its laxative effect when ingested and the soothing properties for achy feet when soaked. The farmer learned even more about the water when he allowed for the water to evaporate out of a glass leaving a white powdery residue behind which is known as the mineral Epsom salts.

🧂 Epsom salts became a huge commercial success for the treatment of achy muscles, minor skin rashes, and as a laxative. It even led to the creation of Epsom salt spas.

🧂 Today, we know Epsom salts as magnesium sulfate. It is often used as a soak for a hoof abscess or bruise, orally as a laxative under veterinary supervision, and as a topical treatment for sprains, strains and acute swelling. Typically the topical treatment is using a green gel-like product called Magna Poultice or Magnapaste or Epsom Salt Poultice which contains Epsom salts. The green gel can be used for foot abscesses and bruises too by packing the product into the foot followed by a bandage.

🧂 Do you share that huge bag of Epsom salts with your horse? It is ok if you enjoy a nice Epsom salts bath for your own achy muscles for a little self care.

😰 There’s an “S” word amongst horse owners that makes one jump from fear and that is the much dreaded strangles. This highly infectious upper respiratory disease is caused by Streptococcus equi subsp equi. The incubation period for strangles is typically 3 to 8 days.

Symptoms:
🌡️ Fever
🧫 Abscessesand/or swelling of the mandibular lymph nodes
👃 Nasal discharge
🐴 Inflammation of the throat
🍽️ Difficulty swallowing resulting in a decreased appetite
🫁 Coughing and/or wheezing
🩸 Purpura hemorrhagica (Red spots on the mucous membranes)
🐴 Swelling of the limbs and head

🧪 Diagnosis is made through testing of nasal swabs, nasal wash, guttural pouch wash or swabs of draining abscesses.

💊 Treatment is primarily supportive care that may or may not include the use of antibiotics. In cases where the horse is experiencing respiratory distress, a tracheostomy is often necessary. And in severe cases of guttural pouch infection surgical procedures including a salpingopharyngostomy or modified Whitehouse approach may be required for the management of guttural pouches filled with chondroids (hardened purulent material) and purulent material.

🧫 What is a complication of Streptococcus equi subsp equi?
In some cases of strangles the infection may spread to other lymph nodes other than the head and neck. This is commonly known as a metastatic infection or bastard strangles.

📬Horse owners may have heard the words asymptomatic carrier when referring to a strangles carrier not showing any or mild clinical signs. Unfortunately, these horses will intermittently shed the bacteria which causes recurring strangles infection on the properties where they reside.

💉 Prevention includes administering an intranasal vaccine; however, it is not effective against all infections. And it is not recommended to vaccinate during an outbreak.

☣️ Biosecurity practices are paramount to prevent the spread of this disease to other horses and reduce the risk of reinfection. It is recommended to quarantine new horses for 2-3 weeks.

🩺 In the state of New York, equine strangles is a reportable and actionable disease.
