Zvíkov Castle

There are stories about so called Zvíkovský Rarášek. "Rarach" is a supernatural being common in Slavic folklore. To English it should be translated like Imp or Trickster.

This ghost inhabits and haunts people in the ancient tower. This tower has stones with engraved unknown symbols. It became a part of Zvíkov castle built hundreds years later. Myths and weird events occur here often, including weird photos, technical problems, unpredictable behavior of animals, bizarre spontaneous extinguishing of fires, electromagnetic anomalies, presence of wraiths and ghosts.

In Czech media, it’s a famous subject of investigation. Beyond just the towers, the rest of the castle is surrounded with myths and ghost stories. It is said to be dangerous to sleep in the main tower, because everybody who does, will die within a year. Members of a film crew who slept in the castle died soon after. This is often connected with a story about a curse.

In Czech culture, mythical monsters Fire hounds are also part of mystery surrounding the castle. These spectral dogs are often guards of treasures, hideaways or hideouts. It’s said that these fire hounds (in some versions are these dogs of Zvíkov depicted with burning eyes) are guarding a hidden tunnel from Zvíkov.

Blickling Hall in Norfolk, England:
(Much of this sounds like a good Halloween movie...)

Anne Boleyn, the ill-fated second wife of King Henry VIII, is reputed to haunt Blickling Hall in Norfolk. The unfortunate queen was indicted on a number of trumped up charges and consequently lost her head in 1536.

The present house dates from the Jacobean era. Although the present house was built many years after Anne's ex*****on, an earlier manor that had stood on the site was owned by the Boleyn family.

At Blickling, Anne's ghost is said to appear on the midnight of every May 19th, the anniversary of her death. Witnesses describe how she is dressed in white and seated in a phantom carriage, driven by a headless coachman, and headless horses. Anne herself is also headless, her bleeding severed head resting on her lap. The carriage materializes at the hall's gates, races up the driveway before abruptly stalling at the front of the house. Some accounts relate how Anne then disembarks and enters the building, where she is said to wander from room to room.

The story of Anne's ghost at Blickling Hall is associated with an earlier tale which tells how her father, Thomas Boleyn, is said to ride around Norfolk every May 19th terrorizing anyone unfortunate enough to encounter him. The tradition relates how Sir Thomas, as penance for his inaction during his daughter's downfall, has to a cross a dozen Norfolk bridges on the anniversary of her death for the next thousand years. Supposed witnesses to Sir Thomas's ordeal describe how he carries his severed head under his arm and is pursued by a horde of screaming demons.

Other odd happenings at Blickling include a mysterious grey lady, who has been sighted in the house and on the grounds by the lake. She was once witnessed by a butler who went out to enquire if she was looking for someone, to whom she replied: "That for which I search has long since gone". The next moment she vanished.

Eerie groans are said to emanate from a bedroom in one of the towers. They are thought to belong to Sir Henry Hobart, who died there after being mortally wounded during a duel in 1698. A room in the house known as "Old Bullen's Study" apparently had such an oppressive atmosphere few would dare to venture into it, so it was locked up. The exact location of the room has now been forgotten.
