Wyoming – Platte River, Near Fort Laramie

As far back as the 1800’s there have been reports of an old ghost ship appearing on the Platte River.

It’s said to be a sailing ship with masts covered in frost.
The ship’s crew usually appear huddled together around a co**se.

When they disperse the identity of the co**se is revealed to be someone the onlooker knows.

That person soon dies.

A trapper named Leon Weber saw his fiancé on the ship in 1862.
In 1903, Victor Heibe saw a friend on board the ship.

Each sighting was followed by the death of the person seen on the deck.

Ghosts of the Rialto Theatre in Joliet, Illinois

The “Jewel of Joliet” not only continues to host hundreds of customers, it also is called home to a couple of resident ghosts. The most often spied is a nameless spectral woman who is thought to have been an actress who performed at the theatre many years ago. She is described as being in her twenties, very pretty, sometimes surrounded by hazy light, and thought to have been a well-known performer of her time. She has been reported to have been seen floating around the theatre by staff, customers, and workmen, becoming especially active during the period of time that it was closed to the public. Many believe that she so loved performing there that she’s just not ready to leave this world.

Two more spirits, one male and one female, are sometimes spied in the auditorium’s balcony. According to the legend, the pair fell to their deaths from the balcony, and like others who have died in tragic accidents, they just won’t move on.

Other reports include sudden periods of icy coldness, strange noises, objects that seemingly move of their own accord, and the feeling that they have been “jabbed” by an unseen finger.

Ghosts reported in medieval Europe tended to fall into two categories: the souls of the dead, or demons. The souls of the dead returned for a specific purpose. Demonic ghosts existed only to torment or tempt the living. The living could tell them apart by demanding their purpose in the name of Jesus Christ. The soul of a dead person would divulge its mission, while a demonic ghost would be banished at the sound of the Holy Name.

Most ghosts were souls assigned to Purgatory, condemned for a specific period to atone for their transgressions in life. Their penance was generally related to their sin. For example, the ghost of a man who had been abusive to his servants was condemned to tear off and swallow bits of his own tongue; the ghost of another man, who had neglected to leave his cloak to the poor, was condemned to wear the cloak, now "heavy as a church tower".

These ghosts appeared to the living to ask for prayers to end their suffering. Other dead souls returned to urge the living to confess their sins before their own deaths.

Ottie originally vanished in 1891 and his body was discovered five months later near Bluff Mountain.

Hikers report meeting a young boy in these woods who asks for directions then disappears.
