Topic: 4 Pillars of a Balanced Spiritual Life: Emphasis on Work/Service

Hello all, this is Helen bowing in with this week's talk.
Thich Nhat Hanh taught that a balanced spiritual life rests on four pillars:
1. Work/Service
2. Practice
3. Study
4. Play
Work/service is often the obligatory and dreary part of our spiritual life that we often want an escape from. Many of us think of work/service as a practicality... but what if we brought a new perspective and actually embraced it as a spiritual practice? With a personal story about my own journey and some reflection, get ready to add color to the gray area of life!

Topic: Open Hand, Open Heart: The Practice of Generosity

The Second Mindfulness training is a commitment to generosity in the face of suffering caused social injustice, oppression, and exploitation. As compassionate human beings, we feel moved to help in times of deep strife. Even the simplest of actions help us feel less powerless in the midst of the visible, systemic pain. Yet at times the everyday spiritual practice of generosity can test us more deeply. How do we practice generosity towards the coworker who is rude to us? How do we practice generosity when we feel overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated? This talk will explore generosity as a much needed, regular spiritual practice that holds a mirror to our attachments, our intentions, and the ways we move through the world.

Topic: Who Are You?

Dear Friends, This week’s Dharma talk begins with a seemingly simple question: Who are you? We will begin by exploring this through a classic Buddhist story: the dialogue between the monk Nagasena and King Milinda, who arrived with sharp questions and left with a quiet mind. At the heart of their exchange is a chariot, and the surprising discovery that when you look for the thing itself, you cannot find it and yet there it undeniably is. This is the teaching of non-self (anatta): not that we are nothing, but that we are not as separate, as fixed, or as alone as we tend to believe. As Thay taught, when we see clearly into our own nature, compassion arises by itself — like water finding its way downhill. I look forward to diving deeper into this topic with you this Tuesday. With palms together, Matthew

Topic: The Procrastinating Buddhist

I’m a chronic procrastinator, which regularly leads to stress, worry, anxiety, and negative consequences. I’ll be discussing what The Buddha said about procrastination, and how using Buddhist principles can help me do the things I need and want to do in a timely manner.

Topic: Pillars of a Balanced Spiritual Life: Emphasis on Play

Friends, meditators and countrymen/women/people, please lend me your ears. This is Helen bowing in with this week's talk.
Thich Nhat Hanh taught that a balanced spiritual life rests on four pillars:
Work/Service
Practice
Study
Play
Work, practice, and study are focused on and embraced wholeheartedly while play is understated, underemphasized and an afterthought. We'll be examining the value of play in our lives and undergo a playful endeavor. Come one, come all and looking really forward to connecting with you all!

Featured Speaker: Drew Layton
Topic: Impermanence

Hi dear friends,

This is Drew bowing in. This week we'll be looking at the teaching of impermanence. Though it can be found in every aspect of life, impermanence is often one of the most difficult truths for us to accept, and our grasping for permanence in an impermanent world leaves us forever unsatisfied. I'll be exploring our resistance to embracing impermanence, the ways we can truly live into it, and how living into it can bring us immeasurable beauty, presence, and freedom.
