Serenity with Evenity…this is a tale about osteoporosis, inspired by a conversation with one of our patients.
Osteoporosis weakens bones. Weaker bones break easier. Broken bones alter lives, especially for those 65 and older. And here’s a scary stat: 1 in 2 women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis in their lifetime. That bears repeating: half of all ladies over 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis at some point. Osteoporosis cannot be cured, but it can be mitigated.
Osteoporosis has very few symptoms, and sadly far too many patients are diagnosed with osteoporosis only after they have fallen and broken bones. The most common diagnostic tool is the DXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) test. It is fast, painless, and noninvasive. It is recommended that all females over the age of 65 as well as younger post-menopausal females with risk factors be tested for osteoporosis. Though osteoporosis screening of males is not deemed necessary to date, it is alarming that 20% of all Americans with osteoporosis are men.
There are several treatments for osteoporosis, including weekly oral medications such as Fosamax and annual infusions such as Reclast or Prolia. These medications aim to prevent further bone weakening.
There is a newer class of treatments that actually strengthens bones. Talk about cool! The most common of these medications is a drug called Evenity that takes about an hour to infuse. It is given once a month for a year. Anecdotally, I have seen several patients continue with Prolia after their Evenity to maintain their strengthened bones.
At Infusion Solutions, we care for many, many patients with osteoporosis. It’s important. Broken bones change the trajectories of people and their families every day to the tune of over 2,000,000 broken bones every year in the United States alone. I know from family experience that all it takes is one fall to change the course of a person’s final years.
Back to our patient…she is receiving Evenity infusions to strengthen her bones. Doing so reduces the risk that a fall will alter the trajectory of the rest of her life. She is finding serenity with Evenity - I don’t know if that is an Evenity tagline or not, but it popped in my head, and I like it.
Today’s treatments mitigate the impact of osteoporosis. Talk about osteoporosis with your doctors, older friends, and family. Get screened. Get older friends and family screened.
We can make a difference, one loved one at a time.
