We are writing to honor the life and legacy of John “Big John” Merritt.
Throughout generations, grave diggers and death-care professionals play a vital, though often behind-the-scenes, role in the funeral process. Mr. Merritt did far more than dig graves; he prepared final resting places and built burial vaults with the utmost care, ensuring that every individual was treated with dignity.
His impact extended deeply into our organization as the beloved uncle of Brianna Charles-Chiles. Growing up, Brianna was inspired by the dedication of both her father and her Uncle John, whose commitment to the profession ultimately guided her own path into death-care service. Their work demonstrated that caring for the departed is fundamentally an act of caring for the living.
Today, we recognize John "Big John" Merritt for his profound contributions to our field and his dedicated service to families during their most vulnerable moments. We also wish to acknowledge all the men and women who work quietly behind the scenes to make dignified farewells possible.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, to Markham Burial Vaults, and to everyone who knew him.
Sincerely and with love,
Brianna Charles-Chiles and the Chiles Funeral Home Family
