One hundred days can change everything.

When Ashley needed emergency surgery at 26 weeks pregnant, her daughter, Willow, arrived 14 weeks early. Suddenly, Ashley and Kathryn found themselves navigating a NICU journey they never expected.

For the next 100 days, the Henrico Doctors’ Hospital NICU team cared for Willow and supported her family through every uncertain moment. Kathryn remembers feeling like the team did more than provide medical care. They made their family feel truly cared for.

Today, Ashley and Willow are healthy, and their story is a powerful reminder of what expertise, teamwork and compassion can mean when families need it most.

Watch their story and meet some of the caregivers who were by their side from day one to day 100.

What happens when you visit a freestanding emergency room, or FSER?

FSERs provide emergency care in neighborhood locations, with a doctor on duty 24/7. They can evaluate and stabilize critical conditions, begin treatment and provide testing or imaging when needed.

To help make emergency care more accessible across our community, Henrico Doctors’ Hospital has two freestanding emergency rooms: Scott’s Walk ER and Hanover Emergency Center.

Just like in an emergency department, patients are treated based on the severity of their condition — not always in the order they arrive. Depending on your needs, your next step may be treatment in the ER, discharge with follow-up care or admission to a hospital.

Watch the video for a behind-the-scenes look at what you can expect during an FSER visit!

Santa gave an extraordinary gift this summer — a kidney to a stranger.

Dave Bell, one of Santa’s helpers who brings Christmas cheer to children across Central Virginia, became a living kidney donor July 29 at the Virginia Transplant Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.

His reason was simple: He had two kidneys, and someone else needed one.

Living kidney donation can offer another path forward for someone with kidney failure. Potential donors complete a thorough medical and psychosocial evaluation to help determine whether donation is appropriate and safe for them.

Watch NBC12’s story to hear from Dave and Dr. Amanda Bailey about living kidney donation and the impact it can have:

On July 29, Dave Bell became a living kidney donor.

The American Heart Association’s HeartMan stopped by Retreat Doctors’ Hospital this past weekend as we prepare for the Central Virginia Heart Walk on Oct. 17 at Innsbrook.

Heart Walk helps build a community of lifesavers by expanding CPR education, supporting lifesaving research and helping more people feel prepared to respond during a cardiac emergency. Immediate bystander CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.

We’re recruiting walkers and team coaches to join us. Sign up, invite others and help Central Virginia take steps toward a healthier tomorrow:

Every minute matters during a stroke. Fast care can help protect brain function and lower the risk of long-term disability.

That’s why door-to-needle time — or DTN time — is so important. It’s the time it takes a patient with an ischemic stroke to receive clot-busting medication (“needle”) after arriving at the hospital (“door”).

We're proud to be part of HCA Healthcare, a leader in stroke care. Our teams follow proven best practices to help patients get safe, high-quality treatment when they need it most. Those efforts have helped achieve an average DTN time of 33 minutes across HCA Healthcare hospitals — 45% faster than the national standard.

Christmas in July: A gift that could change a life

Central Virginia residents may know Dave Bell as Santa Claus; the familiar face who brings holiday cheer to hospitals, parades, community events and sensory-friendly visits for children. This summer, Dave gave a different kind of gift: He anonymously donated a kidney at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital to help someone he had never met.

His reason was simple.

‘I have two of these things, and I only need one,’ Dave said. ‘There’s somebody who has none and they need one.’

Living kidney donation gives people who need a transplant another possible path to care. Because the number of kidneys available from deceased donors does not meet the need, living donors can help make transplant possible sooner for some patients.

‘Stories like Dave’s make organ donation feel real and personal,’ said Dr. Amanda Bailey, transplant surgeon at the Virginia Transplant Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. ‘They show that donation is possible and that one person can make an enormous difference in someone else’s life.’

Dave’s path to donation required commitment. After learning that he needed to lose weight to become eligible, he lost more than 40 pounds and later completed the evaluation process and surgery.

Now, he hopes his story encourages more people to learn about living donation.

Whether he is helping a child experience the joy of meeting Santa or helping give a stranger another chance at life, Dave’s focus remains the same: Give what you can, where you can, while you can.
