The people behind HGI Counseling show up every day throughout the Greater Houston Metro area for a simple reason: they believe everyone deserves support, regardless of their circumstances.
Keilen Yun is an LPC-Associate specializing in supporting preteens, adolescents, young adults, and parents as they navigate anxiety, academic pressure, burnout, family conflict, and major life transitions. Drawing on more than 16 years of experience in youth education and support, she also leads workshops focused on adolescent burnout prevention, emotional well-being, recovery, and resilience. As a bilingual Korean-English therapist, Keilen is passionate about creating culturally responsive spaces where young people feel understood, supported, and empowered to grow.

Living with a disability — visible or invisible — takes energy most people never see. The prep work before a social event. The mental load of navigating spaces that weren't built with you in mind. The quiet exhaustion of explaining yourself, again, to someone who still doesn't quite understand.
And for the people providing care — partners, parents, friends, siblings — the emotional weight is real too. Caretaker fatigue is its own kind of invisible experience, and it deserves just as much attention.

At HGI Counseling, we start every conversation with one question: what do YOU want to be different? Our therapists are trained in collaborative approaches that meet clients where they are — including individuals navigating life with a disability, and the people who love and support them. Sliding-scale fees mean cost isn't a barrier, and no waitlist means that access isn't either.
If you or someone you care for has been carrying more than feels manageable, we're ready to talk. Learn more at hgicounselingtx.org.

At HGI Counseling, we approach each relationship with an important principle: stay curious. We don't walk in with assumptions. We don't let a diagnosis lead the conversation. We start by really listening to what the person in front of us wants to say, and let their priorities guide our work together.
In its simplest form, that's Collaborative Therapy. And it's also what being a good ally looks like in everyday life.

A few ways to start:
Talk to the person directly — not their caretaker, not their interpreter — unless they tell you otherwise.
Follow their lead on whether to acknowledge their disability at all.
If they bring it up, stay curious. If they don't, stay present.

The communities where people feel safest aren't always the ones with the most resources. They're the ones where people make room for each other.
If you've learned something from us this month, consider supporting our work: https://hgicounselingtx.org/

One of the most powerful things you can bring to a conversation is curiosity — and the willingness to stay in it.
Person-forward language is a good place to start. "Person with a disability" instead of "disabled person." "Person who uses a wheelchair" instead of "wheelchair-bound." These aren't just word choices. They reflect who leads: the person, not the condition.
If you want to go deeper, Marshall Rosenberg's workbook, called "Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life", is an excellent place to explore how language shapes the way we connect with one another. His framework centers on staying curious, reflecting back what you hear, and resisting the impulse to assume you already understand what someone else is experiencing. Not every disability is visible. Some of the most common barriers people navigate every day aren't obvious to the people around them. A few examples are listed in the graphic, and below. Keep in mind that these are just a few examples, and you probably know someone who's handling an invisible disability, whether or not it appears on this list.

ADHD and autism spectrum conditions
Chronic fatigue and long COVID
PTSD
Chronic pain conditions
Anxiety and depression
Hearing loss

Behind each of these is a person already doing significant internal work just to show up, and you rarely know the full picture. That's exactly why compassion doesn't need context to be offered, and it's why HGI Counseling therapists take a collaborative approach to every session. If you or someone you know is looking for mental health support, we're ready to help: https://hgicounselingtx.org/counseling-services/

Thirty-six years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. It changed what it meant to belong in American public life, and it's the reason July is now recognized as Disability Pride Month.
Disability Pride is a time to acknowledge how far we've come, and remain honest about how far there is still to go. Not every disability is apparent. Not every barrier is physical. And people with disabilities don't need pity. They need all of us to advocate for expanded access, whether it's a physical ramp, or work accommodations for someone experiencing an invisible condition.
This month, we're exploring what it looks like to build communities that are more empathetic, more connected, and more compassionate. We hope you'll follow along.💙

To every single participant who showed up for themselves and their community during our Breaking Barriers campaign: YOU DID IT.

You've modeled self-compassion for your families. You've created new connections in your neighborhoods. You've discovered (or rediscovered) what self-care means for YOU. You've proven that personal wellness and community support can grow together.

When Mental Health Barriers Fall, Communities Rise. Thanks for rising with us, Houston. 💙

HGI Counseling Executive Director Carrie Koch Linbeck gets it — finding time for self-care is easier said than done. Here's what she's been learning:
"I haven't always practiced what I preach. I carve out time for self-care, but get caught up in the daily work and very often skip it."
So she started small. Sketching out an embroidery project between meetings. A two-minute creative break before the next call. A few gratitudes at lunch.
"I think, 'when on earth am I going to find 20 minutes?' But I can find two minutes when a call ends early."
Those small moments added up — and now she keeps a running list of two- to five-minute ideas she actually looks forward to--and is now practicing what she preaches.
You don't have to overhaul your routine. You just have to start somewhere. This June, our Breaking Barriers campaign is making sure more people in our community have access to the support they need, and you can be part of it!
