7 Warning Signs of an Eye Emergency You Should NEVER Ignore!

Red or irritated eyes don't always mean emergency, but some symptoms require IMMEDIATE medical attention to protect your vision.

1️⃣ Thick Eye Discharge
Thick yellow or green fluid coming out of the eyes. It can cause crust to build up around your eye lids and can be a sign of infection.

2️⃣ Sudden Vision Loss
Vision loss includes blurry, darker, or worse than usual vision. Seek medical attention as soon as possible.

3️⃣ Extreme Light Sensitivity
If bright lights suddently become uncomfortable for your eyes, you may have photophobia, which can be an emergency.

4️⃣ Severe Eye Pain
An intense, deep ache inside or around your eye shouldn't be ignored. Eye pain is a warning sign that needs medical attention.

5️⃣ Eye Injury or Trauma
Whether you've injured your eye, gotten chemicals splashed into it, or have something stuck inside, don't wait to get medical help.

6️⃣ Redness in One Eye
Having one eye that's significantly redder than the other can be a warning sign, especially when you're experiencing other symptoms.

7️⃣ Headaches, Nausea, or Seeing Halos
If you're experiencing headaches, nausea, or seeing glowing rings around lights, these could be warning signs of an eye emergency.

👁️ Not all eye irritation is an emergency!

Common problems like dry eyes and eye allergies are usually less urgent. However, knowing the difference between everyday irritation and an eye emergency can help you recognize when to seek care.

You can have 20/20 vision and still have a vision problem. 👀

20/20 mainly tells us how clearly you can see things at a distance. It doesn’t tell the whole story about how well your eyes work together.

If your eyes aren’t staying coordinated, you may notice blurry vision, headaches, eye strain, or trouble focusing while reading—even though you can still read the 20/20 line.

That’s why a full eye exam looks beyond just the eye chart.

If you or your child struggles with reading or frequent eye strain, it may be worth getting checked.

A pediatrician can check your child’s eyes, but that exam is usually a basic screening. It can help spot obvious problems, but it may not show the full picture of how your child’s eyes are working.

An optometrist can do a much more complete eye exam. They can check the health of the entire eye, look for hidden prescriptions, test how the eyes work together, and use special tools that most pediatric offices simply do not have.

That matters because some vision problems are easy to miss. A child may seem like they can see fine, but still have an issue that affects reading, focus, schoolwork, or comfort.

Pediatricians are great for an early screening and can help point you in the right direction. But if your child needs a real eye exam, it makes sense to go straight to the eye expert.

Seeing 20/20 does not always mean your child’s vision is perfect. A full eye exam can help catch problems that a basic screening may miss.

Stellest lenses are designed to do more than just help a child see clearly — they’re made to help slow the progression of myopia, or nearsightedness.

They use a special lens design with a clear central area for sharp vision, surrounded by tiny lenslets that create a controlled optical signal on the retina. That signal helps reduce the eye’s tendency to keep growing longer, which is one of the main reasons myopia gets worse over time.

The goal isn’t to “cure” nearsightedness, but to slow how quickly the prescription increases as a child grows.

For the right patient, myopia-control lenses like Stellest can be an important part of protecting long-term vision.

20/20 vision doesn’t always mean your child’s eyes are working the way they should.

A child can read the eye chart perfectly and still struggle with binocular vision, depth perception, eye teaming, tracking, or conditions like amblyopia — commonly known as lazy eye.

These issues can make reading, focusing, judging distance, and keeping their place on a page more difficult, which can sometimes look like a learning or attention problem in the classroom.

That’s why a comprehensive eye exam looks at much more than just how clearly your child can see from far away.

At Frame & Focus, we check how the eyes work together, how well they focus and track, depth perception, and more.
