VCU’s CKG CMHRC had the privilege of presenting to a group of young men at the Broken Men Foundation Youth Academy in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month.

It is so important that we continue educating our youth on the mental health challenges that many of us face each and every day. Early education and open conversations are key to prevention, awareness, and helping our youth better understand mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Our topic, “How Conflict Affects Your Mental Health,” was right on time. Being able to make connections between everyday life experiences, conflict, emotions, stress, relationships, and mental health is so important in building awareness and helping young people recognize when they may need support.

Thank you to the for your mentorship, continued dedication, and commitment to pouring into these young men and creating spaces for growth, healing, and empowerment.

As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s continue moving the mission forward by increasing awareness, encouraging conversations, supporting one another, and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. 💚

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

At the Cameron K. Gallagher Community Mental Health Resource Center, we are committed to increasing access, providing support, and meeting individuals and families where they are. Mental health matters every day, and no one should have to navigate it alone.

This month, we continue the work of breaking stigma, building connections, and supporting our community.

If you or someone you know may need support, we’re here for you.

☀️🌿 Spring Into Wellness Tip: The Benefits of Movement 🌸

Movement doesn’t have to mean an intense workout — even small amounts of physical activity can have powerful benefits for your mental and physical health. Our bodies are designed to move, and incorporating gentle movement into your day can help support overall wellness.

Benefits of movement include:
🚶 Boosting mood by releasing feel-good chemicals like endorphins
🧠 Reducing stress and supporting emotional regulation
💤 Improving sleep quality
⚡ Increasing energy and focus throughout the day
💪 Supporting heart health, strength, and overall physical well-being

Movement can look different for everyone. It might be a walk outside, stretching in the morning, dancing to your favorite music, or taking a few minutes to move your body between tasks.
Remember — it’s not about perfection, it’s about consistency and finding movement that feels good for you. 🌷

☀️ Spring Into Wellness Tip: Soak Up Some Sunshine 🌿

Sunshine does more than brighten the day — it can have a powerful impact on both your mental and physical well-being. Taking a few minutes to step outside and enjoy natural light can help your body reset and recharge.

Some benefits of sunshine include:
🌞 Boosting your mood and helping reduce stress
💛 Supporting vitamin D production for bone and immune health
😌 Improving sleep by helping regulate your body’s natural rhythms
⚡ Increasing energy and focus throughout the day

Even a few minutes outside can make a difference. Try stepping out for a short walk, enjoying your morning coffee on the porch, or simply sitting in the sunlight for a moment of calm.

Small moments in the sun can be a gentle reminder to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself. 🌸

☀️ Spring Into Wellness Tip #1: Trade Screen Time for Sunshine 🌿

As the weather starts to warm up, it’s a great time to reset some of our daily habits. One simple shift that can support both your mental and physical health is swapping a little screen time for time in natural light.

Try small changes like:
🌞 Stepping outside for a few minutes of sunshine
🪟 Opening your windows to let in fresh air
💧 Increasing your hydration and drinking more water throughout the day
🚶 Taking a short walk instead of scrolling

These small adjustments can help improve mood, boost energy, and support overall wellness. You don’t have to make huge changes — small, intentional steps can make a big difference.

Follow along this month for more Spring Into Wellness tips to help you care for your mind and body. 🌸

💙 March is Social Worker Appreciation Month 💙

This month we recognize the compassion, dedication, and advocacy that social workers bring to their communities every single day. Social workers meet people in some of their most vulnerable moments and work alongside them to navigate challenges, build resilience, and create meaningful change.

From supporting individuals and families, to advocating for equitable resources and access to care, social workers play an essential role in strengthening our communities.

To all the social workers out there — thank you for the work you do, the lives you impact, and the care you bring to the world every day. 💙

💗 Kindness Reflection

As Kindness Week comes to a close, take a moment to pause and reflect on the impact of small, meaningful actions.

Ask yourself:

✨ What did I do this week that made a difference in someone’s life?
✨ Was there something someone did for me that I can pass on to others?
✨ What did I learn, and what am I grateful for?
✨ How did it feel to practice random acts of kindness?
✨ Did I learn something new about myself or someone else?

Reflection helps us recognize growth, deepen empathy, and carry kindness forward beyond one week.

Let’s continue choosing compassion, connection, and care — for ourselves and for others. 💗
Being kind to yourself doesn’t mean ignoring growth — it means allowing room to learn without harsh self-judgment. When we respond to ourselves with patience and forgiveness, we strengthen resilience and emotional well-being.

This week, try offering yourself the same care you would offer someone you love. You deserve it. 💙

💙 Consistency and Care: How to Show Others You Care

Showing care isn’t only about big moments — it’s about showing up consistently in small, meaningful ways.

You can show others you care by:

✨ Regularly checking in and following up, no matter the circumstance
✨ Validating their feelings and making space for their experiences
✨ Offering unconditional care and support
✨ Providing specific help, like offering to cook a meal or help with cleaning
✨ Being a good listener and asking thoughtful questions
✨ Including them in plans or creating time to do what they enjoy

Consistency shows others that you are reliable and trustworthy. It helps build stronger relationships and deeper connections.

Being there during difficult moments matters — and so does continuing to show care even after the crisis has passed. Small, steady acts of kindness remind people that they are valued and not alone. 💙
