🕷️ Ticks Are Out in Full Force Across Virginia – Protect Yourself and Your Family! 🕷️

Virginia is experiencing an increase in tick activity this year, and health experts are expressing concern about tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, alpha-gal syndrome (the "red meat allergy"), and the recently emerging concern of Powassan virus.

As you enjoy the outdoors this summer, take a few simple precautions to reduce your risk of tick bites:

Wear long sleeves and long pants when hiking or working in wooded or grassy areas.

Tuck your pants into your socks when possible. (Yes, it may not be a fashion statement, but ticks don't care about your style choices.)

Use an EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Treat clothing and shoes with permethrin when spending significant time outdoors.

Stay on cleared trails and avoid walking through tall grass and brush.

Perform a thorough tick check after spending time outside, paying close attention to the scalp, behind the ears, armpits, groin, behind the knees, and between the toes.

Shower within two hours of coming indoors to help wash away unattached ticks.

Check pets regularly, as they can bring ticks into your home.
If you find a tick attached to your skin, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers by grasping it close to the skin and pulling straight upward with steady pressure. Avoid burning the tick or applying petroleum jelly.

Seek medical attention if you develop a rash, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, or flu-like symptoms after a tick bite.

Enjoy the beautiful Virginia outdoors—but remember, the smallest creatures can sometimes cause the biggest problems. Stay safe and stay tick aware this summer!

Dr. Weiss had the honor of talking to a group of High School students from Patrick Henry High School yesterday about "being a doctor". The most common question? "How many years did you have to go to school AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?" Magic answer = 14 years. (it got kinda quiet after that 🤓). Dr. Weiss is pictured with his daughter, Lexi, and her teacher.
