💙 June 15–21 is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Week.

Mental health is an important part of overall well-being, yet many men face challenges in seeking support due to stigma, expectations, or barriers to care. This week serves as a reminder that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

At the Richmond Institute for Veteran Research (RIVR), we recognize the importance of advancing research that supports the mental health and well-being of Veterans and the broader community. Together, we can help foster conversations, encourage support, and promote access to resources.

You are not alone. Support is available, and every conversation matters.

We are so grateful for our incredible doctors, researchers, and team team whose hard work continues to move Veteran health research forward. Most importantly, we want to thank the Veterans who participate in our clinical trials. Your time, trust, and contribution make everything we do possible.

A heartfelt thank you as well to our community partners who joined us and continue to support our mission.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health, especially for our Veterans.

At Richmond Institute for Veterans Research, we honor the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of those who have served while encouraging conversations around healing, support, and mental wellness. No Veteran should ever feel alone in their journey.

If you or a Veteran you know needs support, the Veterans Crisis Line is available 24/7 by dialing 988 and pressing 1.

Together, we can help break the stigma and ensure our Veterans receive the care, compassion, and resources they deserve. 💚

Researchers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently visited the Richmond VA Medical Center to collaborate with our research team on a study focused on improving how changes in bone health are monitored.

Dr Jean Sibonga and Greg Yardley from NASA’s Johnson Space Center met with our team to observe imaging procedures, exchange techniques, and discuss research findings. Their visit provided a unique opportunity for our technologists and scientists to learn directly from experts who help protect astronaut health during and after spaceflight.

The study explores how MRI technology may offer a more sensitive way to detect small but important changes in bone structure in the hip. Astronauts experience bone loss in space due to reduced weight bearing, a process similar to changes seen in individuals with spinal cord injuries. This connection allows the research to advance both space exploration and medical understanding here on Earth.

We are honored to have had the opportunity to host these NASA scientists and to collaborate on research that continues to expand scientific discovery and improve patient care.
