Cervical myelopathy occurs when the spinal cord in your neck becomes compressed. Unlike a pinched nerve, this condition affects the spinal cord itself and can lead to progressive nerve damage if left untreated.

Cervical myelopathy is often misdiagnosed because symptoms can mimic other neurologic conditions. Delaying the correct diagnosis can result in permanent neurologic deficits. This is why a prompt evaluation by a trained neurosurgical team is vital.

Unfortunately, myelopathy is progressive and typically does not improve with medications, injections, or physical therapy alone because these treatments cannot remove the compression. Surgical decompression is likely required to alleviate the pressure on the spinal cord and halt the progression of symptoms.

At Chippenham Hospital, Richmond’s Level 1 Trauma Center, education is just as critical as intervention. That’s why we host regular Trauma Grand Rounds—creating a space where our teams come together to learn, reflect, and stay sharp.

These sessions focus on emerging best practices, help staff recognize subtle warning signs, anticipate complications, and respond with confidence. From early indicators of deterioration to complex trauma presentations, we emphasize what to watch for and how to act quickly when it matters most.

At our most recent Trauma Grand Rounds, trauma staff and trauma directors at HCA had the opportunity to come together for an engaging and informative presentation led by Dr. Charles J. Miller.

Dr. Miller has a special interest in Neurotrauma care. He is dual board certified in neurosurgery and neurocritical care. He also currently serves on the Board of Trustees for CJW medical center.

Opportunities like this highlight our ongoing commitment to education, collaboration, and delivering the highest standard of care. We’re grateful for the expertise shared and the dedication of our trauma teams who lead at the bedside every day.

Back in 2012, when disc replacement was still finding its footing, Dr. Matthew Mayr was helping shape the future. As part of early clinical trials for the Medtronic prestige disc replacement, he was directly involved in advancing techniques and refining outcomes for what many now rely on as a life-changing procedure.

Fast forward to today and that experience matters. This 30 year old patient is one year postop from a C56 Medtronic Prestige cervical disc replacement with Dr. Mayr. Preoperatively, she suffered from severe neck and left arm pain that did not respond to conservative therapies. She underwent cervical disc replacement and had immediate relief upon waking from surgery. She has had no concerns since surgery and is living an active, pain-free life.

Innovation isn’t something we talk about in theory. It’s something we’ve been part of from the beginning—and something our patients continue to benefit from every single day.
