Community is often thought of as people standing close together, moving in the same direction. But one of the greatest gifts a true community can offer isn’t closeness—it’s spaciousness.
A supportive community doesn’t ask us to become someone else in order to belong. It doesn’t demand that we always be strong, always be available, or always have the right words. Instead, it simply says, “You are welcome here.”
In yoga, we practice holding space for ourselves. We notice the breath without forcing it. We observe sensation without rushing to change it. In the same way, we can learn to hold space for one another. Sometimes the greatest act of support isn’t fixing, advising, or rescuing. Sometimes it’s listening. Sometimes it’s respecting someone’s silence. Sometimes it’s honoring their need for distance without taking it personally.
Healthy boundaries aren’t walls that separate us; they’re the clear edges that allow relationships to flourish with trust. When we respect another person’s space, we communicate, “I trust your inner wisdom. I don’t need to control your journey.”
And perhaps, with the strength of your inner yoga practice, you can become that kind of presence for someone else: a person who offers encouragement without expectation, compassion without conditions, and love that makes room for each person to unfold in their own time.
