A landmark study in PLOS Global Public Health mapped county-level breastfeeding initiation across the U.S.

The takeaway? The researchers revealed that national averages conceal stark regional disparities. Local conditions matter, and Gulf Coast communities need expanded access to specialized lactation professionals!

The First Week After Discharge: What Families Need Before Breastfeeding Falls Apart 🤍

The first week home with a newborn is not “just a learning curve.”

It is one of the most critical windows for feeding success—and often, it’s when families feel the most overwhelmed.

Between hospital discharge and that two-week pediatrician checkup, everything changes.

Your milk transitions in.

Engorgement hits.

Latching might suddenly become painful.

Your baby is sleepy or cluster feeding non-stop.

And you are dealing with conflicting advice from family, social media, and frantic midnight internet searches. 📱❌

Too often, families are told to “just keep trying” when what they actually need is urgent, skilled, physician-level lactation support.

Your 3–5-day newborn follow-up at the pediatrician's office is essential for checking weight and jaundice.

But in a standard 20-minute visit, there simply isn't time to deeply assess a painful latch, treat ni**le wounds, untangle a complicated pumping schedule, and check in on your emotional health.

You need BOTH.

Families deserve more than a “wait and see” approach.

You deserve a clear, evidence-based plan tailored to both you and your baby during a dedicated 60- to 90-minute visit. 🤱✨

If your baby is less than a week old and feeding feels painful, scary, or unsustainable, take a deep breath.

Step away from the tracking apps.

You don't have to white-knuckle your way through this.

First-week lactation support can change the entire trajectory of your postpartum journey.

Let’s nurture, nourish, and flourish together. 🌱

World Breastfeeding Week 2026 💛

“Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”
The theme calls us to build on the practical, proven supports that help families initiate and sustain breastfeeding. Our free MILC League is one small but meaningful part of that work—bringing skilled guidance, shared experiences, and community support together.
Join us Monday, August 3, at 10:00 AM at Bloom & Grow Lactation Medicine for:
“When You and Baby Are Apart: Pumping, Storage, and Maintaining Your Milk Supply”
Our guest speaker is Hannah Sheridan, RN, a perinatal mental health specialist and Certified Lactation Counselor who is working toward her IBCLC certification. Hannah works with the Mississippi Public Health Institute and is also a mother of three who has breastfed all three of her children. Hannah is such a gift to our community, and we are so grateful she is sharing her knowledge with us.
Whether separation is planned or unexpected, Hannah will offer practical guidance about:
• Pumping while separated from your baby
• Safely storing and handling expressed milk
• Supporting milk production during periods of separation
• Navigating the practical and emotional challenges of time apart
The presentation will be followed by an open discussion, so bring your questions and experiences.

If you’ve ever cried through a 2 AM feed, you know how tempting a "magic fix" can be.

🌸 But here’s the truth about APNO (All-Purpose Ni**le Ointment): it’s a Band-Aid.

As a mother of twins, I intimately understand the intense exhaustion of the 4th trimester. But my strict stance against APNO is entirely based on my clinical expertise.

As Mississippi’s only board-certified lactation medicine physician, I see families suffering because they were given a generic cream instead of a real diagnosis.

Ni**le pain is a symptom. Whether it's a latch issue, an anatomical restriction, or an infection, we need to find out why you are hurting.

Instead of disrupting your microbiome with unneeded antibiotics or thinning your skin with steroids, our clinic uses 60- to 90-minute visits to treat both you and your baby. We use evidence-based targeted wound care (including light therapy!) to actually heal the tissue, not just numb it.

You don't need to hustle your way through the pain or settle for quick fixes that don't last. You just need the right physician-level care.

Ready to find the root cause? Book an appointment at the link in our bio.

Have you been prescribed APNO (All-Purpose Ni**le Ointment) for breastfeeding pain?

It is common, but at Bloom and Grow Lactation Medicine, we say NO. 🛑

This "magic cream" is a compounded mixture of a steroid, an antibiotic, and an antifungal. 🧪 This "shotgun approach" merely masks pain without finding the root cause, and it can thin delicate skin and disrupt the healthy bacteria that you and your baby share. 🧬

As a mother of twins, I understand the exhaustion and pressure to "make it work," but my stance is entirely clinical.

Patients suffer when given a generic cream instead of a proper diagnosis.

Standard 15-minute visits aren't enough to assess infant feeding.

Our 60- to 90-minute appointments allow us to act as clinical detectives for you and your baby, identifying the root cause of pain.

🔍 We then use evidence-based treatments, such as specialized wound care and light therapy, to promote true healing. ✨

Let's step away from ‌quick fixes and focus on helping your family nurture, nourish, and flourish. 🌸
