ALYSSA KILLEBREW
Some careers begin with a single defining moment. For Dr. Alyssa Killebrew, the path was less about one decision and more about a calling she could not ignore. “I don’t know that it was a single moment as much as a steady calling on my life that I couldn’t say no to,” Killebrew said. That calling was shaped early by her paternal grandmother, whose influence continues to guide both her personal and professional life. “I was heavily influenced by my paternal grandmother, a woman deeply loved and respected by all who knew her,” she said. “She taught me faith, loyalty, urgency, and the value of hard work. She believed in loving people fully, while still holding them accountable and the importance of boundaries when needed.”
Those lessons became the foundation for a career in psychology. “That foundation shaped how I see the world: I believe in the goodness of people, but I also believe we must be honest about bad behavior and have accountability for changing it,” she said. “Psychology gave me a way to live that out–combining compassion with science to help people grow something good in their lives.” Today, Killebrew leads her own private practice, Killebrew Psychological Services, a decision she describes as one of the greatest risks of her career. “In my career life, it was starting my own private practice,” she said. “I come from a family with very clear professional paths, banking leadership and education administration, but neither was mine.” Stepping away from those expectations required faith in herself and her purpose.
