“Made with avocado oil” may not mean what you think it means. 👀🥑

In a UC Davis study, researchers tested 54 processed foods labeled as containing avocado oil and found 48 were inconsistent with authentic avocado oil. The products included chips, salad dressings, and mayonnaise, and many appeared to contain other oils instead.

One surprising comparison: researchers also tested 20 olive oil products, and 19 of the 20 passed.

The takeaway here is: don’t let the front of the package do all the talking. Read the full ingredient list, look for brands that publish independent purity testing, and remember that premium-sounding claims aren’t always a guarantee of what’s actually inside.

Important context: these findings apply to the specific products/lots tested in the study. Formulations and suppliers can change, so the results should not be taken to mean that every current product from a listed brand is necessarily adulterated.

We’re sharing this because consumers deserve transparency about what they’re paying for.

🥑 Save this for your next grocery run.

How did you sleep last night? 🌙 😴

Not how long, but how well. Did you wake up rested, or instead just as worn out as when you went to sleep?

Close to a billion adults worldwide have obstructive sleep apnea, and roughly 80 percent of moderate to severe cases have never been diagnosed. That matters here, where cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and our CVD mortality rate is among the highest in the nation.

Sleep apnea is linked to substantially higher cardiovascular risk as well as to depression and anxiety.

Women get missed most often, because they tend to report fatigue, insomnia, and low mood instead of loud snoring, and it gets written off as stress or hormones. Some signs almost nobody connects to it, like grinding your teeth at night, waking repeatedly to use the bathroom, or nighttime heartburn.

The encouraging part is that this is very treatable once it is identified, and CPAP has come a long way from what most people picture. If you have been blaming your exhaustion on your schedule, it may be worth finding out whether something else is going on.

We price everything else without thinking twice. What an hour of work is worth. What a service should cost. What we’re willing to pay for convenience. But when it comes to our own time, energy, and health, most of us never do the math.

There’s a concept for this called opportunity cost. Every choice you make has a price, and it’s not just measured in dollars. It’s measured in time, energy, and health. When you don’t account for that cost, it doesn’t disappear. It shows up later as chronic stress, exhaustion, and health issues that feel like they came out of nowhere.

Think about the symptom you’ve gotten used to. The afternoon crash. The brain fog. The sleep that never feels like enough. You’ve filed it under “just how I am,” but that’s a cost you’re paying every single day. Research shows chronic stress physically changes your brain and raises your long-term health risks whether you’re aware of it or not.

The good news is that awareness changes everything.

🌿 Pick one recurring commitment that consistently drains you and ask what it’s actually costing you in energy and focus.

🌿 Name one symptom you’ve been writing off as normal, because that’s the first step toward finding out whether something can be done about it.

🌿 Protect your highest-value hours by scheduling what matters most earlier in the day, when your decision-making is sharpest.

🌿 Before you skip sleep or a meal to get more done, ask whether the trade is really worth the cognitive deficit you’ll carry the rest of the day.

Once you can see what something is actually costing you, you get to decide whether it’s worth it.

A brand new study scanned the brains of 2,044 adults and found that people with lower vitamin C had less brain volume in the areas responsible for memory, focus, and attention, plus weaker connections in the network most associated with early Alzheimer’s decline.

Here is what makes that matter: your brain concentrates vitamin C at more than twice the level in your blood. It protects neurons, supports dopamine production, and helps keep your nerve signals fast and clear.

A few things quietly work against your levels. Sugar competes with vitamin C for the same path into your cells. Stress burns through it. Certain medications lower it. And your body does not store it, so you need it consistently.

This is an association, not proof. But across 2,000 people, after controlling for age, lifestyle, and health, the pattern held.

The study out of Japan looked at older adults, but it made me think about my kids. While too much added sugar can be a concern, a glass of organic orange juice or oranges in their lunches can be an easy little boost.

It took one lab test to explain months of feeling terrible.

As a fitness instructor, my first instinct when something feels hard is to push through it. So that’s what I did.

Workouts that usually left me feeling strong and energized were taking me the entire day to recover from. I was winded washing my hair. Exhausted climbing the stairs. Teaching felt like I was dragging my body through something it didn’t want to do anymore. But I kept showing up and pushing harder, thinking I just needed to get past it.

After a particularly challenging class (and after Adams’ encouragement to come by the clinic for bloodwork) I finally decided to take advantage of the entire reason we built Julep Health and had an iron panel drawn.

My ferritin came back at 10. Adams recognized immediately how depleted my iron stores were and what that was doing to my body.

I started digging into more research and was surprised by how much I didn’t know. How many things block iron absorption without you realizing. How much exercise itself can deplete your stores. The body systems it can affect. How wide the gap is between what a lab calls normal and what your body actually needs to feel like itself.

Ferritin depletion can also be gradual. Your body adapts as stores drop, so you keep adjusting your baseline for what “normal” feels like without realizing you’re compensating. That’s exactly what happened with me.

If something has felt off lately with your energy, your hair, your sleep, or your workouts, it might be worth knowing your ferritin number.

Schedule a consult with Dr. Briscoe or order your own ferritin/iron panel at julephealth.com. No referral needed.
