Peripheral neuropathy, defined as damage to the peripheral nerves, affects approximately 1% of adults worldwide.
Symptoms range in severity from mild numbness in the toes to, in rare instances, a severe neuropathy that may result in need for a wheelchair. The prevalence of peripheral neuropathy increases with age and has been estimated to affect 6% to 10% of the population older than 60 years.
