Big News, Everybody!

This last fall, I started up a company called Wild
Hippie Labs, with the goal of using my skills in genetics to help bring wellness-based genetic testing to people. The response was overwhelmingly positive! We started out by offering analysis of genetic testing from Ancestry and other genealogy-based DNA testing companies.

Our original plan was to offer the testing ourselves, but various circumstances (including high client demand for such a small team) this turned out to not be as feasible. We spent a lot of time behind the scenes making some adjustments to our business model to make sure everything is affordable and accessible!

As such, I’m happy to announce that Wild Hippie Labs has decided to outsource our genetic testing step to a company called TellMeGen! They are wellness based like we are and can perform the testing for us while we perform analysis of the data.
(One side note: our company does get a small commission for testing kits our clients buy. We also have a special code our clients can use when they buy genetic testing kits from TellMeGen.)

Once your sample is sent in using the kits, results come in around 1-2 weeks afterward! Pretty speedy and convenient! Plus, the kits are reasonably priced. We made sure to do our homework to make sure we outsourced the testing to a reliable company!

We will be notifying everyone who was on our waitlist for genetic testing, so we can get started right away!

Here’s a quick Valentine’s Day Funny for everyone, with some fun facts behind the joke!

DNA is typically a double helix with two strands. Contained within the strands are four types of “bases”: adenine, cytosine, thymine, and guanine. Adenine on one strand with always pair up with thymine on the other strand via a hydrogen bond, and cytosine will always pair with guanine on the other strand via a hydrogen bond. This specific hydrogen bond allows the DNA strand to be easily unwound to be read or replicated, and the base pairing rules allow for easy repair of any problems. And the four base pairs act as a four-letter code for genes!

In the chemistry world, Safety Data Sheets are referenced for the safe handling of various chemical substances, as well as risks and what to do in case of an emergency involving this substance.

This one’s a little bit of a thinker, but it highlights a very fun naming convention in organic chemistry:
-Alkene: all single bonds between the carbons in the carbon chain. The specific name of the substance will end in “ane”
-Alkene: presence of one or more double bonds in a carbon chain. The substance name will end in “ene”
-Alkyne: presence of one or more triple bonds between carbons in the carbon chain. The name of the substance will end in “yne”.
