Energy bills are rising — but consumers are not powerless.

Across the country, households are feeling the pressure from higher electric and gas bills. For many families, this is becoming a real affordability issue.
So what can people do?

First, review your bill. Look at your usage, delivery charges, supply rate, and any third-party supplier charges. If something looks wrong, contact your utility or an energy consultant and ask for a clear explanation.

Second, ask about payment plans and assistance. Many states offer energy assistance programs, and residents can also call 211 to find local utility assistance resources. At the federal level, programs like LIHEAP help eligible households with utility bills, energy crises, and weatherization.

Third, reduce usage where possible. Weatherization, insulation, LED lighting, smart thermostats, and efficient appliances can all help lower monthly costs.

Fourth, consider whether solar makes sense for your home or business. Rooftop solar, community solar, and solar-plus-battery options can help some customers reduce exposure to rising utility rates.
The right option depends on your roof, location, usage, credit, available incentives, and whether you rent or own.

Fifth, speak up. Utility rate increases are usually reviewed by state public utility commissions. Consumers can submit public comments, attend hearings, and file complaints.
In Maryland for example, that means the Maryland Public Service Commission and the Office of People’s Counsel, which advocates for residential utility customers.

Finally, contact your elected officials. At the state level, reach out to your delegates, state senator, governor’s office, and utility regulators. At the federal level, contact your members of Congress and ask them to protect energy affordability, fund assistance programs, support weatherization, and expand access to clean energy options like solar.

Rising energy costs should not be accepted quietly. Review your bill, ask questions, explore assistance and efficiency options, consider solar where it fits, and make your voice heard.

If your bill has gone up, don’t just pay it silently — question it, challenge it, and advocate for affordability.

If you live in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, or Illinois….This impacts you directly. Unfortunately it will continue. It may be time to consider a different energy sources for your home other than solely relying on the utilities. They’re stressed.

Also, PJM’s last two base capacity auctions show a growing shortfall compared to its reserve margin targets, according to the grid operator’s market monitor. Prices will continue rising until large data center loads are addressed, it said.

Energy Volatility Is Redefining Real Estate
Efficiency, Reliability, and Power Take Center Stage

Energy volatility is driving a seismic shift in real estate. Efficiency, reliability, and power resilience now shape property value as much as location.

· Cost Pressures: Non-mortgage expenses—utilities and insurance—have jumped 35% since 2019, squeezing homeowners and fueling demand for smart energy features like batteries, solar, and EV charging stations.

· Commercial “Power Premium”: In markets like Silicon Valley, high-power buildings command rents 49% above standard leases. Investors favor assets
with onsite solar, viewing them as NOI-boosting and protective against volatility.

· Data Center Strain: Electricity prices near data hubs have risen as much as 267% in five years, prompting “green leases” to share costs and incentivize sustainability.

· Regulatory Impact: New energy codes taking effect in May 2026 may add up to $31,000 per new home. Cities like New York and Seattle require retrofits for carbon compliance, or risk fines and declining valuations.

· Valuation Divide: Energy-efficient assets are capturing a “green premium,” while less efficient properties face discounts and obsolescence.
Energy efficiency isn’t optional—it’s vital for owners, investors, and buyers navigating today’s fast-changing market.
