They play a major role in the healing process of our patients and their loved ones. Our pastoral care team is present throughout the St. Joseph's Hospitals to serve your needs. The BayCare Proton Center on the campus of St. Joseph’s Hospital is now open and accepting adult and pediatric patients, expanding access to advanced radiation treatment closer to home in West Central Florida. Hospital Care Coordination Week, October 11 to 17, honors the contributions of our care coordination team of registered nurses (RNs), social services specialists and case management assistants! These team members work with patients, patients’ families, caregivers, doctors, nurses, other medical staff and the community to synchronize all the moving parts in caring for our patients.

While patients are in the hospital, these team members make sure we are following the important protocols so that patients receive the best care for their conditions and illnesses. Care coordination also creates discharge plans to help patients get further help, care and rehabilitation after leaving the hospital. They can connect patients with community resources and assistance that is available.

Care coordination is also involved with assisting with insurance and coverage benefits for our patients. These team members guide and advocate for our patients. Thank you for all you do on patients’ behalf.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our hospital and team members from our imaging services and Shimberg Breast Center urge you to make a promise to get your mammogram. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the U.S. besides skin cancers. Overall, the ACS says the average risk of a woman in the U.S. developing breast cancer sometime in her life is about 13 percent. This means about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer.

Getting a mammogram screening is the best way to detect breast cancer early. Trying to fit getting a mammogram into an already busy schedule can be difficult. But when breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. That means we all have to do our part to beat breast cancer. So let’s make a promise to ourselves and to our families to put breast health in our hands and get a mammogram now.

Congratulations to Dr. Brendan Malik, our chief medical officer (CMO) since 2023, for two recent accolades! Dr. Malik was named to a new position within BayCare as vice president of Physician Enterprise Development and as a CMO for the healthcare system. In this newly established role, Dr. Malik will help strengthen physician alignment, support ambulatory growth and expand access to care across the communities BayCare serves. He will continue to serve as CMO here at St. Joseph’s Hospital-South until a replacement is appointed.

Dr. Malik brings more than a decade of BayCare experience and a strong clinical perspective to the new role, including leadership in quality improvement, medical staff leadership and care delivery initiatives.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

Here are some important messages from Dr. Christina Layton, pictured here, a BayCare Medical Group physician affiliated with our hospital and board certified in general surgery and specializing in breast surgical oncology.

"Make sure you get your annual mammogram and stay up to date on your yearly mammograms. Early detection is the key. The sooner you can detect small cancers there are more treatment options available. With early detection, the cancers are easier to cure and the prognosis is almost 100 percent."

"I advocate for breast self-awareness, really knowing your body because you can be your own best advocate. You will know when something is new and different before anybody else."
