Denton County Military Veteran Peer Network

Denton County Military Veteran Peer Network TRUST • CAMARADERIE • HOPE
Our Mission is to facilitate connection for Veterans and their families. What Is The Military Veteran Peer Network?

No one wades a stream without getting wet and no one comes back from war unchanged. This is a toughening process for some people – a self-awareness generation engine. The efforts of our troops may produce internal struggles, but those efforts also produce tested, accomplished people. Sometimes, people need a hand in slowing the internal disquiet and conflict that combat, deployment, military sexua

l trauma, or other abnormal situations produce. No one is better prepared to speak with a Veteran about her experiences than another Veteran, a peer. With the peer-to-peer network, veterans go through a training course that teaches them how to facilitate groups of veterans. Once trained, they are tasked with going out into their local communities and creating peer groups. Because members of the group set the rules, no two peer groups are the same. Military Peer Veteran Network (MVPN) began in 2010. Peers are trained to facilitate groups of veterans recovering from mental illness, substance abuse and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Veteran Peers assist veterans in finding community resources, driving veterans to the VA hospital, assisting with job searches, hosting forums and celebrations for veterans and their families and mentoring veterans in the Veterans Diversion Court. MVPN is an affiliation of service members, veterans and family members dedicated to establish camaraderie and trust with each other, identifying and vetting community resources and, collectively, contributing to the communities where we live.

⭐️ 𝗩𝗣 𝗙𝗹𝘆 𝗧𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 - Group Highlight ⭐️

Meet Steve our VP Fly Tying group lead. Steve has been fly tying since his early teenage years not long after he inherited his grandfathers fly fishing gear at age 11.

Steve has been guiding Veterans through fly tying instruction at Veterans Point since 2016 and is Gold level FFI Fly Caster and Instructor.

Every month the group meets to learn how to tie flies, have a bite to eat, and connect with other local Veterans.

⭐️𝓐𝓷𝓰𝓮𝓵 𝓦𝓲𝓿𝓮𝓼 - Group Highlight ⭐️

A little over a year ago Angel Wives Leader Angie Brunkhardt landed at Veterans Point for a Galentines Sourdough workshop. Little did we know then what that connection would turn into for her and so many others.

Angel Wives blossomed out of a passion of Angie’s to help other widowed Veteran spouses navigate the difficulties that come with losing their husbands. This isn’t just a group it’s a sisterhood of women who can truly say “I get it” and walk alongside one another in the happy and the hard.

Angie desires to connect with wives who are facing terminal illness with their spouses and help them navigate the difficulties ahead with a supportive group of women surrounding them.

The saying goes
“If the military wanted you to have a spouse they would have issued you one”. 👎🏼

Today we wanted to take a moment to recognize all of you Military & Veteran Spouses that have stood in a role that is often unrecognized and undervalued.

You played a part then & still do today. Your selfless devotion has been a vital support role that has offered up encouragement, displayed adaptability, and continues to give love even when war comes home.

A special cheers to each one of you on this Military Spouse Appreciation Day 🇺🇸

📸: Just a few of the amazing spouses we consider part of our VP Fam.

📍𝘗𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 at Riding Unlimited

4 weeks in. 4 more to go. Our leaders at RU have been guiding a new group of Veterans through the importance of building trust and connection through groundwork.

When a new group comes in we have several alumni from the previous group that stay to assist with the new Veterans. This has been crucial to see the team build in this manner and witness the connection that continues to strengthen between self, horse, and healthy community.

*If you have submitted an application to join us please be patient as interest is growing, our small but mighty team will connect with you soon for the upcoming sessions*
