Anthem HealthKeepers Plus is Virginia’s largest Medicaid insurance provider and now offers many new benefits for its members in Virginia including grocery cards, employment support, money for personal care items, and much more. Meet Donna, a mental health counselor at Family Service of Roanoke Valley. She works with adults navigating grief, depression, anxiety, and trauma, and she'll tell you the same thing we've believed for 125 years: it's never too late to ask for help.

Donna's work is part of a legacy that started in 1901, and it continues because of a community that shows up for one another. This September, we're celebrating that legacy at our 125th Anniversary Gala, and we'd love for you to be there.

When financial paperwork becomes overwhelming, and there's no one to help, it can put someone's housing, benefits, and stability at risk.

That's where our PAM program steps in. We manage Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits for community members navigating intellectual disabilities, dementia, or substance use disorders, making sure their financial affairs stay protected and their housing stays secure.

Last year, we walked alongside 300 neighbors through that process, completing 24,140 financial transactions on their behalf.

This is the kind of quiet, steady work we've been doing for 125 years. On September 17th, we're celebrating that legacy at our Anniversary Gala, and we'd love for you to help shape what the next 125 years look like.

Since 1901, FSRV has stood beside individuals and families in the Roanoke Valley, through generations of change, always rooted in the same mission: hope, healing, and brighter tomorrows.

We are taking a peek at our archives in honor of our upcoming 125th Anniversary Gala.

125 years ago, a small group of dedicated people saw families in the Roanoke Valley who needed more than a helping hand. They needed a partner in hope.

📍 1901: Our story begins as the first social work agency in Roanoke.

📍 1929: It became clear families needed more than financial assistance. Associated Charities got a new name, a new structure, and an expanded mission.

📍 1971: We achieved national accredited status and helped lead the shift from social casework to clinical social work.

📍 1990: We launched a treatment program for victims of child abuse and grew to nearly 60 full and part-time staff.

📍 Today: We serve more than 2,000 individuals and families each year across two major service areas, in and out of the office, through a diverse, multidisciplinary staff.

Every chapter of this story was written by people who believed our community deserved care, dignity, and a path forward. That belief still drives everything we do.
