If you or a family member has diabetes, your next eye exam may be more important than you realize. 👁️Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among working-age adults in the United States, and most of the vision loss it causes is preventable when caught early. Diabetic retinopathy develops when elevated blood sugar gradually damages the small blood vessels that supply the retina. In its early stages, it produces no symptoms at all. The changes are only visible through a dilated eye examination.
