At Generations Counseling & Care Management, we believe no one should have to navigate aging, illness, or caregiving alone. As a follow-up to our post yesterday, we expanded on our heat safety tips with a few additional reminders to help older adults and those with disabilities stay safe during periods of extreme heat. A few simple precautions—like staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors during peak heat, and checking in on older loved ones—can make a big difference. We included an interactive map to local cooling centers throughout New Jersey.

Do you have a loved one who is at risk for dehydration or heat related illness? Extreme heat can pose serious health risks for older adults, especially those living alone, managing chronic health conditions, or taking multiple medications. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop quickly. Symptoms include dizziness, confusion, weakness, nausea, headache, and rapid heartbeat.

We had the privilege of being a part of an educational panel last week, set up by Upper Saddle River Cares at the Upper Saddle River Library. We had an interactive discussion on the importance of pre-planning, long-term care resources and options, staying at home vs. moving into a senior care community, and general health care resources. We were all tasked with giving the audience a key piece of advice. We gave them a little home-work.

1. Write down your current care team (this could be family, a trusted doctor, or your friends)
2. Identify one gap in your support system.
3. Ask Yourself: Who is coordinating all of this?

There's nothing better than seeing healthcare resources come together for a great cause! We were proud to team up with Visiting Angels of Wayne, NJ for Brightview Senior Living Pizza Wednesday fundraiser, benefiting Alzheimer's New Jersey. Events like these are such an important reminder that supporting individuals and families impacted by dementia takes a village- and our care partners continue to show up in amazing ways.

We believe there is something powerful about a community coming together for a shared purpose. We are proud to support the upcoming Alzheimer’s New Jersey Walk to Fight Alzheimer’s in Paramus and honored that our Director of Marketing, Laura Marie Huisking, is serving as Walk Chair for this important event.

We’re excited for the upcoming Kick Off Party at Brightview Senior Living as we begin this journey to raise awareness and support families impacted by dementia-related diseases.

Join us for an evening of networking, light refreshments, raffle prizes, and great company as we help kick off this year’s walk together. We hope to see you there! 💜

Her life was all about being in service to others and even though she has been gone for almost sixteen years, I carry that with me every day.
