So many of you have donated to Camp Mak-A-Dream and I want to share a really remarkable letter from a recent volunteer.

he following volunteer testimonial from a nurse at Kids and Young Siblings Camp at Camp Mak-A-Dream was quite impactful: “There are moments in life that quietly change you
forever, and for me, Camp Mak-A-Dream was one of them. I came expecting to give back through my lifelong passion for nursing. I stepped outside my comfort zone hoping to make a difference in the lives of children with cancer and their
siblings. I never imagined they would be the ones to change me. These incredible kids taught me more about courage, resilience, joy, and unconditional love than I could ever teach them. They laughed with their whole hearts, embraced every adventure, and reminded everyone around them that life is meant to be lived—even in the face of unimaginable challenges. What I didn’t
expect was to find a family among the volunteers, too. Sharing this experience with such compassionate, selfless people was a gift. A special thank you to Dr. Mike, Dr. Chi, and Christina, whose kindness, humility, and enormous hearts inspired me every single day. Working alongside people like them reminded me
that medicine is so much more than treating illness—it’s about creating hope, comfort, laughter, and unforgettable moments. As I boarded the plane home, I realized I wasn’t leaving camp the same person who arrived. My heart is fuller,
my purpose is stronger, and my love for nursing has been renewed in a way I didn’t think was possible. To every camper, sibling, volunteer, physician, counselor, and staff member—thank you for reminding me why I chose this profession 30 years ago. I came hoping to leave a small piece of myself behind.

Instead, I left with pieces of all of you forever woven into my heart. I especially enjoyed the camp fire and talent show. Until we meet again… thank you for changing my life.”

I think about this quote constantly, mostly because it's hilarious, but also because it's dead on.

When I think about what first drew me to yoga, I immediately remember the second class I ever took and the woman next to me floated from Downward Facing Dog into a beautifully elegant Scorpion Handstand.

I saw that and immediately went, “I WANNA DO THAT!” And so the first 5-6 years of my yoga practice were dedicated to feeding my ego and nailing that beautifully elegant float from Downdog to Scorpion Handstand.

I got there eventually. And it felt amazing for about a week.

Then I wanted the next pose. And the next one after that. There was always some new shape waiting on the other side that I convinced myself would finally make me feel like a "real" yogi.

It took me a long time to realize the pose was never actually the point.

What mattered was who I became chasing this perfect shape. The version of me who learned to fall out without being convinced falling meant I failed.

The version of me who stopped needing every attempt to look pretty in order for it to count.

The version of me who finally understood that showing up shaky and imperfect was the practice, not some lesser version of it.

The poses are just the gateway. What you're actually signing up for is a slow, ongoing lesson in getting out of your own head (or your own ass 😅).

If you want to dig deeper and learn to approach your practice beyond your ego (and your ass), my No BS Yoga Philosophy Course will show you how.
