🌏Have you ever thought about how infant feeding impacts the environment?
Today is Day 5 of World Breastfeeding Week - "Breastfeeding & Sustainability." When breastfeeding is possible and desired, it has a lower environmental impact because it requires no industrial production, packaging or single use containers, transport or cold-chain distribution. Studies that compare infant feeding systems find that formula feeding contributes higher greenhouse gas emissions and plastic waste due to these factors.
That said, every feeding journey is different, and many families choose to use formula for medical, personal, or structural reasons – all of which we respect and support!
Here are some ways you can reduce your environmental impact if your family uses formula:
♻Prepare bottles carefully to avoid waste (make only what is needed when possible)
♻Choose powdered formula when appropriate (typically less packaging and transport impact than ready-to-feed)
♻Recycle formula packaging when facilities allow
♻Use durable, reusable bottles instead of single-use feeding products
♻Safely prepare and store formula to reduce discarded unused milk
♻Consider buying in bulk when feasible to reduce packaging waste
♻Dispose of expired formula through appropriate household waste streams (not drains or toilets)
Sustainable feeding is about systems, access, and support. The most sustainable feeding system is one where families can safely and confidently use the method that works best for them, with minimal waste and maximum support.
Here at UR, we support all families in their feeding journeys. 🫶
