“We Keep the Fires Lit: Rising Through Milk Medicine.”

The theme for this year’s Indigenous Milk Medicine Week speaks to the enduring strength of Indigenous communities and the connections between culture, community, tradition, and infant feeding.

For those of us working in Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine, culturally responsive care means listening to all voices, respecting traditional knowledge and practices, and working alongside communities to address barriers to equitable lactation support.

We honor the families, knowledge keepers, advocates, and community leaders who continue to carry milk medicine forward and keep these fires lit. 🫶🔥

We encourage you to learn more about the programming and celebration of this week through the Indigenous Milk Medicine Collective!

We’re excited to see the AAMC shine a spotlight on the growing field of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine! 🤱🙌

As the specialty continues to gain recognition, we’re proud that the Division of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital and Golisano Children's has helped shape the field through innovative clinical care, research, education, fellowship training, and advocacy. Under the leadership of Dr. Casey Rosen-Carole, our division is committed to advancing evidence-based care while training the next generation of clinicians!

Our international LILAC (Lessons in Lactation Advanced Curriculum) Fellowship is one example of that commitment, preparing clinicians of many backgrounds with advanced knowledge and clinical expertise to care for breastfeeding and lactating families while developing future leaders in education, research, and advocacy.

Thank you to the AAMC for highlighting the important work of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine and the impact this specialty has on families and the future of healthcare. 👏👏👏

Did you know World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated in more than 120 countries each year?

As we close WBW 2026, the central message remains: breastfeeding success is not just an individual responsibility – it is shaped by systems of support.

Sustainable support systems include:
🩷Healthcare teams providing evidence-based lactation care
🩷Employers supporting lactation needs in the workplace
🩷Communities normalizing and supporting infant feeding
🩷Families & friends offering encouragement and practical help
🩷Policies that protect and enable breastfeeding

At UR Medicine Breastfeeding and Lactation Services, we are more than proud to support families in every stage of their feeding journey.

Thank you for joining us in World Breastfeeding Week 2026. 🫶 The work of building sustainable support systems continues every day.

👩‍🔬Did you know human milk is a living biological fluid that changes over time to meet a baby’s needs?

Breast milk isn’t just calories! It contains antibodies, immune cells, enzymes, hormones, and beneficial bacteria that support infant development and immune protection.

Today is Day 6 of World Breastfeeding Week - "Breastfeeding Benefits for Babies & Parents." For infants and children, breastfeeding is associated with ⬇ risk of respiratory and gut infections and may ⬇ the risk of certain chronic diseases later in life.

For parents, breastfeeding is associated with a ⬇ risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and even type 2 diabetes.

Breastfeeding isn’t always easy, and challenges are common. But access to timely, evidence-based support can make a difference in your outcome!

If we can support you in your journey, please let us know! Find more information here: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/childrens-hospital/breastfeeding-lactation-medicine

🌏Have you ever thought about how infant feeding impacts the environment?

Today is Day 5 of World Breastfeeding Week - "Breastfeeding & Sustainability." When breastfeeding is possible and desired, it has a lower environmental impact because it requires no industrial production, packaging or single use containers, transport or cold-chain distribution. Studies that compare infant feeding systems find that formula feeding contributes higher greenhouse gas emissions and plastic waste due to these factors.

That said, every feeding journey is different, and many families choose to use formula for medical, personal, or structural reasons – all of which we respect and support!

Here are some ways you can reduce your environmental impact if your family uses formula:
♻Prepare bottles carefully to avoid waste (make only what is needed when possible)
♻Choose powdered formula when appropriate (typically less packaging and transport impact than ready-to-feed)
♻Recycle formula packaging when facilities allow
♻Use durable, reusable bottles instead of single-use feeding products
♻Safely prepare and store formula to reduce discarded unused milk
♻Consider buying in bulk when feasible to reduce packaging waste
♻Dispose of expired formula through appropriate household waste streams (not drains or toilets)

Sustainable feeding is about systems, access, and support. The most sustainable feeding system is one where families can safely and confidently use the method that works best for them, with minimal waste and maximum support.

Here at UR, we support all families in their feeding journeys. 🫶
