Protecting What Matters Most: Why We’re Passionate About Hearing Protection

Hearing is one of those things most people don’t think about until it starts to change. Whether it’s struggling to follow conversations, dealing with ringing in the ears, or feeling overwhelmed by noisy environments, hearing challenges can have a significant impact on everyday life.

At Affordable Hearing, helping people hear better has always been our mission. But just as important as improving hearing is protecting it before damage occurs. That’s why we’re proud to offer Jett Maxwell Tone Filters, a hearing protection solution designed to reduce harmful noise while preserving the sounds you want to hear.

Why Preventative Hearing Care Matters

Many people assume hearing damage only happens at loud concerts, on construction sites, or in industrial workplaces. The truth is that hearing loss is often gradual and accumulates over time.

Everyday activities such as mowing the lawn, attending sporting events, working in noisy environments, listening to music through headphones, or spending time in busy restaurants can all contribute to long-term hearing damage.

Unfortunately, once hearing is damaged, it cannot be fully restored. That’s why prevention is so important.

Jett Maxwell Tone Filters align perfectly with our commitment to helping people protect their hearing and maintain a better quality of life. They are engineered to reduce harmful noise levels while preserving the natural clarity of speech, music, and everyday sounds.

Do I really need hearing aids?

If you’re asking yourself whether you really need hearing aids… you might be asking the wrong question.

Hi, I’m Chuck Smith, owner of Affordable Hearing.

Almost every week, someone comes into one of our offices in Rochester, Logansport, or Lafayette and asks me:

“Chuck, do I really need hearing aids?”

And honestly?

That’s a fair question.

But the better question is:

“What is my hearing loss already costing me?”

Because hearing loss isn’t just about volume.

Most people with hearing loss can still hear.

The problem is they can’t understand.

Especially in restaurants.

Family gatherings.

Church.

Meetings.

Anywhere there’s background noise.

So they start adapting.

They sit closer.

They avoid certain places.

They ask people to repeat themselves.

They turn the TV up.

And eventually…

They convince themselves they’re doing fine.

But here’s what I often see:

The spouse is frustrated.

The family notices.

The grandchildren get tired of repeating themselves.

And the person with hearing loss slowly starts participating less.

Not because they want to.

Because it’s exhausting.

One of the most common things I hear after someone gets properly fit with hearing aids is:

“I wish I had done this sooner.”

Not once have I had someone tell me:

“I wish I would have waited another five years.”

And here’s something else most people don’t realize.

Hearing aids today aren’t what they were 5, 10 or 20 years ago.

Modern hearing aids can automatically adjust to different environments…

Help reduce background noise…

Connect to your phone…

Stream phone calls and TV audio…

And help your brain work less hard during conversations.

The question isn’t always:

“Do I need hearing aids?”

Sometimes the better question is:

“How much longer do I want to struggle without them?”

If you’ve been wondering whether hearing aids might help you, come see us at Affordable Hearing in Rochester, Logansport, or Lafayette.

Let’s find out together.

Be honest…

Have you ever thought, “Maybe I need hearing aids… but not yet”?

Comment “NOT YET” if you’ve had that thought. 👇👂

You Wouldn’t Go Outside Without Sunscreen… So Why Are You Doing This?

Most people wouldn’t go to the beach without sunscreen… but they’ll go to a concert, race, or fireworks show without hearing protection.

I’m Chuck Smith, owner of Affordable Hearing.

Summer is here.

That means concerts.

Festivals.

County fairs.

Motorcycle rides.

Race tracks.

Fireworks.

Baseball games.

And all kinds of outdoor events.

And while most people are thinking about protecting their skin…

Almost nobody is thinking about protecting their hearing.

The problem is…

Hearing damage is usually silent.

You don’t feel it happening.

You don’t see it happening.

And often…

You don’t realize it happened until years later.

Inside your inner ear are thousands of tiny sensory cells that help you hear.

Once they’re damaged by loud noise…

They don’t grow back.

They don’t heal.

They’re gone.

That’s why hearing protection is so important.

Especially during the summer when we’re spending more time around loud environments.

Have you ever left a concert, fireworks show, or sporting event and noticed:

Ringing in your ears?

Muffled hearing?

Everything sounding dull afterward?

A lot of people think that’s normal.

It’s not.

That’s your auditory system telling you it was exposed to more noise than it liked.

This is why we’re having so many conversations about hearing protection right now in our Rochester, Logansport, and Lafayette offices.

Because prevention is always easier than treatment.

At our Rochester and Logansport locations, we keep Jett Maxwell hearing protection in stock.

They’re affordable, easy to use, and a great option for concerts, festivals, sporting events, motorcycle rides, and other loud summer activities.

But for people who want the best fit and comfort possible…

We also offer custom SoundGear hearing protection.

These are custom-made specifically for your ears.

They’re incredibly comfortable, reusable, and perfect for musicians, hunters, factory workers, motorcycle riders, frequent concertgoers, and anyone who spends time around loud noise.

The goal isn’t to block out life.

The goal is to protect your hearing so you can continue enjoying life for years to come.

Most people don’t think about hearing protection until after hearing damage happens.

That’s backwards.

The best time to protect your hearing is before you need hearing aids.

If you’ve got concerts, fairs, races, fireworks, or other loud events planned this summer, stop by Affordable Hearing in Rochester, Logansport, or Lafayette and ask us about hearing protection options.

Your future hearing depends on the choices you make today.

What’s the loudest thing you’ll be doing this summer?

Concert? Fireworks? Motorcycle rides? Racing?

Drop it in the comments below. 👇👂🎵🏍️🎆🏁

Do you STRUGGLE to understand the TV?
This may help!

If you constantly turn the TV up… but still struggle to understand what people are saying… this might completely change your life.

I’m Chuck Smith, owner of Affordable Hearing.

One of the biggest complaints we hear in our Rochester, Logansport, and Lafayette offices is this:

“I can hear the TV… I just can’t understand it.”

And that’s an important difference.

Because for most people with hearing loss…

The issue isn’t just volume anymore.

It’s clarity.

Especially dialogue.

That’s why turning the TV louder often doesn’t solve the problem.

In fact…

It usually just makes everything louder for everyone else in the house too.

This is where TV streamers can make a huge difference.

There are devices like:

The Starkey StarLink Edge TV Streamer
The Signia TV Sound streamer
And the Unitron TV Connector

And what these devices do is pretty amazing.

Instead of blasting sound through the room…

They stream the TV audio directly into your hearing aids.

Almost like wireless earbuds—but designed specifically for your hearing loss.

So speech becomes clearer…
background sounds become less distracting…
and many people can actually turn the TV volume DOWN.

We’ve had patients tell us:

“For the first time in years, I understood a movie without subtitles.”

Or…

“My spouse finally stopped complaining about the TV volume.”

And honestly?

That’s a bigger quality-of-life improvement than most people expect.

At Affordable Hearing, we help patients pair these accessories with their hearing aids all the time.

And TV streamers are just one option.

There are also remote microphones and table microphones that can help people understand speech better in noisy restaurants, meetings, church groups, and family gatherings.

The important thing to understand is this:

Modern hearing healthcare is no longer just about “making things louder.”

It’s about helping you hear clearly in the situations that matter most in real life.

And for many people…

That starts with being able to enjoy TV again without frustration.

If you’re struggling with TV clarity…

You may not need a louder television.

You may need better access to the sound.

At Affordable Hearing, we can show you which hearing aids and accessories work best for your lifestyle and help you hear TV the way it was meant to sound.

Be honest…

Do you use subtitles all the time now?

Comment “SUBTITLES” if you do 👇

One of the biggest problems with hearing loss… is that most people don’t notice it when it starts.”

Hi, I’m Chuck Smith, owner of Affordable Hearing.

This is what makes hearing loss so tricky.

It’s usually gradual.

Not sudden.

Most people don’t wake up one morning unable to hear.

Instead…

It slowly changes over time.

A word missed here.
A sentence missed there.
Trouble hearing in restaurants.
People sounding less clear.

And because it happens gradually…

Your brain adapts.

You start filling in blanks.

Guessing words from context.

Reading facial expressions more.

Turning the TV up a little at a time.

So to YOU…

It feels normal.

Because your brain adjusted to the change while it was happening.

That’s why so many people say:

“I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten.”

Or…

“I thought everybody mumbled.”

And most of the time?

Someone else notices it first.

Usually a spouse.
A family member.
Sometimes even coworkers.

They’re the ones that keep saying things like:

“The TV is too loud.”
“You didn’t hear me.”
“You keep saying what?”

This is one of the most common conversations we have in our Rochester, Logansport, and Lafayette offices.

People often come in because somebody ELSE encouraged them to get checked.

And many are shocked when they finally see the hearing test results.

The important thing to understand is this…

No awareness does NOT mean no problem.

Because untreated hearing loss can slowly affect:

Communication
Relationships
Mental fatigue
Social confidence
Cognitive abilities
And even brain health over time

That’s why catching it early matters so much.

You don’t have to wait until hearing loss becomes severe to pay attention to it.

The earlier you know what’s happening…

The easier it is to do something about it.

At Affordable Hearing, we can give you a simple baseline hearing test so you know exactly where you stand.

Who noticed your hearing changes first?
