Family Service Rochester was founded in 1965 as a nonprofit organization with a staff of three and the mission to support and enhance the dignity and quality of life for individuals and families in our community. Kelli DeCook, our Director of Child Welfare Services, (third person from the left) joined fellow Community and Family Resource Centers leaders from across Minnesota in Washington, DC advocating for families and educating our legislators about the impact of Family Resource Centers.

Minnesota is committed to partnering with communities to address the root causes of adverse outcomes and promote child and family well-being through policy, system and environmental changes.

FSR is proud to be a part of this movement. Last year we opened the Family Resource Center in Rochester to bring vital support, connection, and resources closer to home.

May is Supervised Visitation Awareness Month (you may have spotted orange ribbons in support!) but we want to take a moment to assure you our services at the Family Access Center are available year-round.

Our Family Access Center is a member of the Supervised Visitation Network (SVN), an organization of more than 800 providers worldwide, each dedicated to providing safe parental access for families. When there are concerns for a child's safety or well being, supervised visitation ensures a child is able to develop and maintain relationships with their families while protecting them from adult conflicts and other family challenges.

Services available:

* Supervised Parenting Time: This involves one-on-one supervision by trained and neutral staff who objectively document parent-child interactions.

* Monitored Parenting Time: FAC staff provide a safe space for parent-child interactions with intermittent monitoring.

* Safe Exchanges: FAC facilitates exchanges of children for parties who share joint custody, ensuring a neutral and secure environment.

Jon Pelto is in our Volunteer Spotlight!

Meet Jon Pelto, who volunteers because he likes giving back to the community and helping others in a meaningful way.

One of the things Jon enjoys most about volunteering is delivering Meals on Wheels so people do not have to go out and get groceries themselves. He says the experience is rewarding, especially when people tell him he is doing a good job.

Thank you, Jon!

"...what kinds of systems would we design if we truly expected people to live long lives, to contribute across the life course, and to remain connected to community?" - Dave Beal, Family Service Rochester

This Older Americans Month, our own Dave Beal calls on us consider age equity, to move us from attitude to structure.

Staff Spotlight: Katie Schulz

Meet Katie Schulz! For nearly 21 years, Katie has been part of Family Service Rochester’s Family Access Center, providing a steady presence for families during supervised parenting time.

Katie is especially mindful of how uncomfortable supervised visits can feel at first. She tries to make the room welcoming, offering games, toys, activities, and choices so families can shape the time in ways that feel natural. “I just try and make it comfortable,” she says, recognizing that it can be difficult for parents to spend time with their children while being observed. Her approach is calm and practical: give families space, support the visit, and step in gently only when a policy or safety concern requires it.

After more than two decades, Katie still finds the work meaningful because no two visits are exactly the same. She likes the variety and the unpredictability of walking into a shift not knowing which family she will work with or what the visit may bring. Most of all, she values being part of an organization committed to families.

“I just feel good about working for Family Service Rochester,” Katie says. “That’s another reason I’ve stayed.”
