Richard Appiah Akoto, a teacher in rural Ghana, became an international sensation after photos showed him teaching Microsoft Word by drawing the entire computer interface on a chalkboard. His school had no working computers, but Akoto refused to let that stop his students from learning digital skills. Using colored chalk, he carefully recreated screens, toolbars, keyboards, monitors, and other computer components so his students could understand how the technology worked—even though many had never actually used a computer.

His dedication caught the attention of Microsoft, which flew him to Singapore for its Education Exchange, marking the first time he had ever traveled outside Ghana. Microsoft praised him for his creativity and commitment and announced plans to work with a local partner to provide his students with devices and software, while also giving Akoto access to professional training. Microsoft later said it was committed to providing the school with a full computer lab, along with initial support and training—turning one teacher's determination with a piece of chalk into an opportunity that could transform his entire classroom.
