Just one month after marrying her husband, Justin, Nina was diagnosed with cancer. Her journey would eventually lead to remission, but not before another serious complication left her unable to move. Nina developed demyelination of her peripheral nervous system and faced a long, uncertain recovery. During her time in the MICU, she experienced delirium and worked with a vertical assist bed to begin rebuilding her strength and mobility. Progress came slowly, starting with the smallest movements and eventually bringing her back to the life she had been fighting for. Today, Nina is teaching full-time again and enjoying life with Justin and their dog, Ranger.

Her story is a reminder of what determination, hope, and the support of a dedicated care team can make possible. Thank you to Nina and Justin, who shared their experiences at our team's recent Critical Care Symposium.

URochester Medicine is one of the first two health systems in New York—and one of just 21 nationwide—to achieve gold status in the American Medical Association’s Joy in Medicine® program. The honor celebrates institutions that use proven methods to enhance professional fulfillment among physicians, and recognizes national leaders in addressing the root causes of burnout among care teams.

“This Joy in Medicine recognition does not mean we have ‘solved’ burnout,” said Craig Rooney, PhD, chief wellbeing officer. “It does mean we are working on the significant drivers of occupational distress. This designation is the starting line, not the finish line. The application gave us the opportunity to highlight exceptional work happening across the institution and to share the story of our enterprise commitment to workplace wellbeing.”

The AMA based its designation on URochester Medicine’s work in five areas: Wellbeing assessments, organizational commitment, efficiency of practice, leadership, and support for physicians and care teams.

Strong Memorial staff celebrated the reopening of a newly renovated unit, which includes dedicated space to treat and test patients suspected of having highly contagious diseases such as Ebola. The 8-3400 medical ICU team moved back to their renovated space Oct. 6.

The unit includes 14 single-occupancy beds and a new biocontainment testing and treatment space. Three patient rooms are specially designed for biocontainment. Adding these capabilities to the legacy hospital helps prepare Strong for future infectious disease emergencies while bringing the unit up to modern healthcare standards.

The renovation also benefits other areas of the hospital. The med-surg unit (6-3600), which temporarily housed the ICU during construction, has regained 10 rooms and is now running at its full complement.

Hospital COO Deirdre Salanger thanked the teams involved in this coordinated effort. "We are thrilled that these upgrades, from the biocontainment testing and treatment areas to staff spaces, have an immediate, positive impact for our staff working in the legacy hospital and our patients,” Salanger said, adding, “Thank you to those who closely coordinated these moves as we continue to build our campus for the future of care delivery.”

Cancer care has changed dramatically over the past century, and so have we. Research has helped create new tools, treatments, and spaces over decades, all united by generations of people working persistently toward ever better outcomes for patients with cancer.

As we look back during our Centennial, we're celebrating the doctors, nurses, researchers, staff, patients, families, and community members who have shaped cancer care at Rochester and the Wilmot Cancer Institute, and continue to push it forward today.

Among Strong Memorial Hospital's100-year history, this year also marks the 20th anniversary of our Center for Community Health & Prevention. Caring for our community goes beyond the inside walls of the hospital, and for the past two decades, CCHP has carried that commitment into neighborhoods across our region, working alongside community partners to help people live healthier lives and prevent disease. Thank you to all those who have been a part of CCHP over the last 20 years and to those who continue to bring health education, programs, research, and initiatives to our community.
