Rochester's Sexual & Reproductive Justice Task Force has hosted and facilitated some essential conversations about various aspects of the birth and reproductive justice spaces. If those spaces (or the people they impact) is your jam or even remotely in your periphery don't miss this great event!!

Rochester's Sexual and Reproductive Justice Task Force (Roc.SRJ) invites you to our 2022 SRJ & You Virtual Conference: Beyond Birth. We’ll be examining all things birth using a sexual and reproductive justice (SRJ) framework. Please check out the link https://2022beyondbirth.eventbrite.com/ to take you to the live tickets.

Our community is buzzing with so much knowledge and activism, it is creating spaces to share how our intersections matter. This conference will be a space to share the abundance of knowledge, resources, and services in and around our community of Rochester, NY. Our goal is to educate people of all backgrounds and unite them for a better understanding of how to fight for sexual and reproductive rights. To accomplish this goal, we must foster an involved and understanding medical community and a support network of comprehensive and holistic services throughout Rochester, NY. Although much of the conference is focused on resources and services in Rochester, NY we welcome people from across the globe to attend!

We strive to make all of our events as inclusive and accessible as possible. We will have live captions available on Zoom. If you would prefer an ASL interpreter, please let us know at least two weeks before the event by emailing [email protected].

If you are interested in sharing your services that are connected to our theme please contact us. The marketing materials will be showcased in a flippable PDF format for our conference attendees and videos will be shared throughout the conference. We are asking for materials to be submitted by Friday, January 7, 2022. Please see the letter in our linktree for more information.

If you are passionate about expanding community birth options in NY, we need your help to encourage to ! It passed unanimously in the house & senate this past spring but has been awaiting the governors signature. Let’s remove barriers for midwives & doulas around the state trying to open birth centers! Birthing people deserve choices!

Sample phone script when you call: “Hi, I’m a New York State resident from _____, and I’m calling to request Governor Hochul’s action to sign A..259a/S1414a into law, as this bill has already passed unanimously through the state legislature. This legislation will allow for licensing midwifery birth centers using the gold standard of accreditation The Governor’s support is necessary in addressing maternal health and birth equity across New York State.”

Take this opportunity to take action on a pressing issue that will help advance quality, respectful, and equitable maternity care in New York State!

Advocates across the state are working to get Governor Hochul’s signature on the midwifery birth center bill before the end of the year. This bill (A.259a/S.1414a) is a bipartisan piece of legislation that has already unanimously passed through New York State legislature. It will simplify state licensure for midwifery-led birth centers using the gold standard of national accreditation, addressing the barriers that midwifery-led birth centers have faced with the state’s current regulatory process.

Take action!! Visit linktr.ee/birthingplacebx for various simple actions that takes moments. Let’s urge Gov Hochul to sign the midwifery birth center bill (A.259a/S.1414a) into law immediately, and share this campaign with your community to also get involved. The Governor’s support is necessary to expand access to essential maternity care options in New York State.

“The birth setting had no association with increased risk for either parent or baby,” said Elizabeth Nethery, a PhD candidate at UBC’s school of population and public health who was lead author of the study. “Our findings show that when a state has systems to support the integration of community midwives into the healthcare system as Washington has done, birth centres and homes are both safe settings for birth.”

In the state of Washington, a planned home birth with a licensed midwife is just as safe as a birth at a licensed birth centre.
